When I read the description of this novel I was intrigued to say the least. You see I spent the 70's and early 80 in Brighton, a neighborhood of Boston. Brighton was predominantly Irish and Italian back then with a fierce sense of neighborhood and ethnic identity. You never said you were from Boston, no, you said you were from Brighton, or Southie or the North End. Boston is like that, then and now. So when I saw this novel I well I know I was going get it. You see I was there wasn't I.

Michael Harvey captures the place, the time and the people perfectly. Listening to the novel I was transported back across the miles and the years. Harvey captures it all. It's a first rate murder mystery wrapped in a coming of age. The characters are richly drawn. I know, I knew some of them in other bodies with other names.

Do get this book. A "wicked pissa" good book as they used to say back in Brighton. A good mystery is rare. A novel that captures the past and presents it so deftly equally rare.

Buy the book and take the ride. And say a prayer for two kids names Billy and Kevin and all the ones just like them.

Where does Cryptonomicon rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is in the first rank of my audiobook collection. Period. If you want a ride though mathematics, number theory, World War II, modern computer hacking, treasure hunting for gold, "crypto", contemporary high tech and several generations of sexual desire on an epic level... well, this is your book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Bobby Shaftoe, a young marine who lives in interesting times and manages to leave a trail of mayham afflecting the Axis on several continents.

Which character – as performed by William Dufris – was your favorite?

Lawrence Pritchard Waterhouse and his grandson Randy. They really are one and the same, separated by several decades and are both, consumed by being the smartest persons in any room they occupy. And both incredibly horny... Like grand father, like grand son.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Bobby Shaftoe carries his young son, Douglas, MacArthur Shaftoe up and down the catherderal stairs in the ruins of Manila, 1945, so the boy would remember him. Yah, that stays with me.

Any additional comments?

Please, buy this book. If you were a nerdy kid, kinda like me, and maybe had an old man who was a World War II Marine, loved history and technology like me... well... "Lock and Load" as Bobby Shaftoe would say. And if not, well start listening and learn a whole lot about a whole lot of things. And have as much fun with this book as you'll ever have with any book. Yeah, its THAT good.

Would you consider the audio edition of Marching with Caesar to be better than the print version?

Haven't read the print version but the audio version was well read, exciting and vastly informative. Most Roman history, at best, gives slight reference to the lives and the world the common citizen and Roman Legionary lived and fought it. Mr. Peake brings his own military experience along with extensive knowledge of the political and social world of ancient Rome that Titus Pullo lives and fights in. Mr. Peake effectively brings the marble men incised on the ancient monuments to life, flesh and not an inconsiderable amount of blood. A great read an outstanding book. Highly recommended.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Titus Pullo. The trajectory of his life before and after joining the X legion is the stuff of great literature. The real Titus Pullo was mentioned by Caesar in his commentaries. He must have been an extraordinary man. This book is fiction but so well researched and written that Titus emerges from the pages, 3-dimensional and very, very human and equally Roman.

Have you listened to any of Simon Burdett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but found his performance first rate.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I had the time probably!

Any additional comments?

I see that this book, alone of the series, has been turned into an audio book. The rest of the series needs to converted to audio format ASAP! This author deserves it and this reader, for one, will be very thankful.
