Historia
Emery Blackwood’s life changed forever the night her best friend was found dead and the love of her life, August Salt, was accused of murdering her. Years later, she is doing what her teenage self swore she never would: living a quiet existence on the misty, remote shores of Saoirse Island and running the family’s business, Blackwood’s Tea Shoppe Herbal Tonics & Tea Leaf Readings. But when the island, rooted in folklore and magic, begins to show signs of strange happenings, Emery knows that something is coming.

All Tell No Show (spoilers)
Revisado: 01-14-25
I did not like this book. The description sounded up my alley but the actual content did not click with me at all. There was no character development, at least in the younger generation. I don’t understand why August loved Emory, as neither have personalities. We are simply told they love each other, it is not constructed within the story itself. Same with Lily and August. And why Lily would just go ahead and murder her bff over a guy we never saw any connection built with whatsoever. It was a slog to finish. I should have returned :/

Monster stories aren’t just meant to entertain. They’re meant to inform, even educate. Above all, they ask us to question our own humanity. Nowhere is this truer than in stories of serial killers. What are the origins of this monstrous archetype? Why are we so fascinated with such gruesome terror? What do they reveal about our fears and anxieties? Explore these and other questions in Serial Killers: Real and Imagined, where public scholar Emily Zarka looks at the serial-killer trope across history, from murky 17th-century legends to 21st-century true-crime obsessions.

Enjoyable Easy Read with a But
Revisado: 07-25-24
I personally really enjoyed this. I’m a big reader and already into true crime, so it wasn’t really anything new. But I enjoyed the theories/themes of the lectures, and the vocal performance was very good.
All that being said - there are errors. For example, at one point she calls the Golden State Killer “James” DeAngelo. This is a small mistake (James is his middle name.) But when it comes to “The Great Courses,” I would like to think there has been editing, and that the information presented is factually pristine. So I was disappointed in that.

When Gyre Price lied her way into this expedition, she thought she’d be mapping mineral deposits and that her biggest problems would be cave collapses and gear malfunctions. She also thought that the fat paycheck - enough to get her off-planet and on the trail of her mother - meant she’d get a skilled surface team, monitoring her suit and environment, keeping her safe. Keeping her sane. Instead, she got Em. Em sees nothing wrong with controlling Gyre’s body with drugs or withholding critical information to “ensure the smooth operation” of her expedition.

Not For Adults…
Revisado: 03-10-24
Is this YA? Maybe it is and I didn’t realize which is my bad. If it’s NOT YA, I’m kind of confused. I had high hopes for this book. The two main characters were very immature, obnoxious, and obtuse for largely no reason. Also this book needed serious editing. There were many, many of the same scene (stuff goes slightly wrong in a cavern.)

Historia
Being on the murder squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed it would be. Her partner, Stephen Moran, is the only person who seems glad she's there. The rest of her working life is a stream of thankless cases, vicious pranks, and harassment. Antoinette is savagely tough, but she's getting close to the breaking point. Their new case looks like yet another by-the-numbers lovers' quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty, groomed to a shine, and dead in her catalogue-perfect living room, next to a table set for a romantic dinner.

Wonderful Audio Book Version
Revisado: 11-10-20
I read this when it first came out and then listened to the audiobook again recently. It's a page turner but in audio form - not sure what we can call that but let's just say I had my airpods in all the time! And I've already read it before.
I love Tana French and this one is towards the top of the list. The narrator did very well also. Didn't just 'do voices' or anything, although you could tell the characters apart. It was very subtle. And she did some great voice acting during the more dramatic stuff. Again not over the top, but very well done.

One Word... TEDIOUS.
Revisado: 11-10-20
God. This book. Tedious is the only word I can use. It is the first book in many, many years (possibly ever) that I didn't finish. Certainly the only one I've left not fully read in my Audible account. I made it so many hours in and just couldn't get through the last four hours, I gave up.
The plot is tedious. It is so difficult to understand that the characters have to stand around telling you and reminding you every other page. You can barely keep track of all the characters who start to bleed into each other.
The narrator REALLY isn't helping. His voice has almost no inflection to it. I don't know how to describe it, but his voice sounds so detached - it makes you feel like the entire thing is just an introduction. There's no sense of when you're getting to the 'meat' of the story.
Oof. This is like someone's first idea in a writing workshop. It just needed more work and a better narrator. I'm sad I won't finish it.

I don't get the hype?
Revisado: 07-18-19
This book had two things I really can't enjoy, a protagonist who is THE WORST, and a major lack of editing. I truly don't get the hype around this book. The author reading her own work did well. I kept hoping there would be a redeeming twist. There was not.

Historia
In this wry take on the post-apocalyptic horror novel, a pandemic has devastated the planet. The plague has sorted humanity into two types: the uninfected and the infected, the living and the living dead. Now the plague is receding, and Americans are busy rebuilding civilization under orders from the provisional government based in Buffalo. Their top mission: the resettlement of Manhattan.

A Bit of a Headscratcher
Revisado: 08-06-18
I, unlike other people, don't think Colson Whitehead was "slumming it" in zombie lit, and there are a few things he added to the genre. However, having read the vastly superior World War Z (Max Brooks) and listened to the amazing audiobook as well, I couldn't help but draw a comparison in which unfortunately Z1 did not come out ahead.
Whitehead can be incredibly sparse and succinct with words and sentences that will really surprise and delight you. But when he isn't, get ready. The whole first preamble almost turned me off to the whole thing. At times, I struggled to follow which moments were the present and which were distant or recent flashbacks, an issue which seemed to plague (pun very intended) many readers/listeners.
All in all, it was fine. The performance was mostly great, with the voice actor doing several different male voices with their own cadence and pitch. However his take on the female voices was over the top and stereotypical. Just got high pitched and vapid sounding. It was a turnoff.
If you want slightly more literary flourish and love New York A LOT, choose this book. Otherwise I would strongly recommend you read WWZ instead. Both the content and the audiobook performances are much, much better.
