Historia
Spurred by personal tragedy, Elaine Pagels turns to a consideration of the Gnostic Gospels, in particular, the Gospel of Thomas. As opposed to the Gospel of John, which asserted that Jesus was an eternally existing aspect of God who came to earth to save humankind, the "secret" Gospel of Thomas agrees that Jesus was in some sense divine, but says that a streak of divinity can be found in all of us.

Essential Reading, inaccurate subtitle notwithstanding

But for this book, I would have left the church in disgust. Instead, I shifted denominations and found a congregation that values critical thinking skills as a gift from the Divine. If you have ever shaken a bible at anyone, know that you have no standing if you are ignorant of this history ... and that you should have better things to do than shake bibles at people anyhow. May God deliver us from those too fearful, lazy or hateful to (1) see the world in anything other than good/evil, true/false, black/white and (2) perceive nuanced thought as anything other than a threat.

Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning classic tells the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall. The working people riot, breaking into the homes of the rich and forcing them to flee. When Wang Lung shows mercy to one noble and is rewarded, he begins to rise in the world, even as the House of Hwang falls.

The way the performer's voice reflected appropriately the age of the character and the emotion of the sentence.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Awesome book, stellar performance
Revisado: 12-28-24
Decades after the fact, I have vivid memories of interminable in-class readings of Huck Finn, dialect and all. As the only person of color in that 9th grade AP/IB English class somewhere along the Gulf Coast, I will testify that the experience was sub-optimal. This book heals. Believe all the hype. Special shout-out to a practically perfect performance with gratitude to whoever cast the performer (I know nothing about how this works) with a voice beautifully suited to the story.

Historia
When painter Winslow Homer first sailed into the Gulf of Mexico, he was struck by its "special kind of providence." Indeed, the Gulf presented itself as America's sea - bound by geography, culture, and tradition to the national experience - and yet, there has never been a comprehensive history of the Gulf until now. And so, in this rich and original work that explores the Gulf through our human connection with the sea, environmental historian Jack E. Davis finally places this exceptional region into the American mythos in a sweeping history that extends from the Pleistocene age to the 21st century.

Great history, serviceable performance
Revisado: 12-24-24
This book certainly must be THE definitive history of the Gulf of Mexico. Some parts appealed more than others. I followed the people-oriented events more easily than the standalone ecology, but that has more to do with personal leanings. The author's acknowledgement and attempt to temper or balance a Eurocentric orientation where possible lent credibility to the content.
In my opinion, the quality of the audiobook is compromised by the choice of performer. The performer speaks American-accented English with a lovely voice perfectly suited for a great many books, but not this one ... or any book that brings him within 1,000 miles of Spanish language.
Here's the thing: any history of the Gulf of MEXICO will invariably require the pronunciation of Spanish words and surnames. The performer reads each purely phonetically and the result jars terribly. A list of words/names plus 30 minutes on Goggle ("how do I pronounce ...?") is not unreasonable prep work, especially not relative to the potential result. I do not speak Spanish but grew up in a Gulf state. Listening to this performer I literally did not recognize names I've been hearing my whole life. The many brutal mispronunciations are all the more glaring against the author's effort to respect the several cultures.
NOTE: For the sake of simplicity, I EXCLUDE passages from conquistadors that could be read in Spanish-accented English. Maybe that's the sort of thing reserved for fiction audiobooks, I don't know.
A heavy consumer of audiobooks (both fiction and nonfiction), I have no insight into how books get paired with performers. The performer gets three stars instead of two because I choose to assume that he did not pair himself with this book. The mismatch and its impact was avoidable in so many ways.
The book is good. The audiobook is just okay.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

I started this book on an airplane and downloaded the audiobook to finish in time for my book club. The book is better read than heard but only because the plot consists of different manuscripts. Either way, this is easily one of the best books I consumed this year.

The Path Between the Seas tells the story of the men and women who fought against all odds to fulfill the 400-year-old dream of constructing an aquatic passageway between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It is a story of astonishing engineering feats, tremendous medical accomplishments, political power plays, heroic successes, and tragic failures. McCullough expertly weaves the many strands of this momentous event into a captivating tale.

Historia
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

The narrator did a good job, especially given the number of characters. I enjoyed the premise, the writing and the story. I will continue with the series.

Historia
Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, feeling no certain calling despite a lively faith, he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging out his sign in Oxford. A local lord asks him to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cesspit. She is identified as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith, and her young man, whom she had provoked very publicly, is in due course arrested and sentenced at the Oxford assizes.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

This book is a story well told. Nonfiction but reads like an episode of Black Sails. In such a circumstance, the narrator plays a critical role. This performance was a perfect match between narrator and story.

Historia
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

I have no idea what to title this review
Revisado: 08-19-24
First: great performance by narrator. Second: good story with heavy cringe factor. I don't mean cringey like "this is awful writing" - I mean that the author succeeded in creating scenes meant to make the reader cringe. Had to listen in chunks spaced apart because the antibero kept me anxious.
This novel reminds me of "American Fiction" movie (haven't read book version). If you know, you know.
