Historia
Thanks to paper-thin walls and the guy’s athletic prowess, Carolyn is gaining an - um - intimate knowledge of her new neighbor's nocturnal adventures. And since Caroline is currently on a self-imposed "dating hiatus," and her neighbor is clearly lethally attractive to women, she finds her fantasies keep her awake even longer than the noise. So when the wallbanging threatens to literally bounce her out of bed, Caroline, clad in sexual frustration and a pink baby-doll nightie, confronts Simon Parker, her heard-but-never-seen neighbor.

Too cute. Really.
Revisado: 06-14-23
The cutesy-ness is too much. The author anthropomorphizes her feelings: Heart, Head, "O" etc. it's unbelievably tedious. If it weren't for that, this would be a fun bit of fluff but I was so annoyed the whole time. Also, the descriptions of SF are bizarre...not the city I live in at all. Reads like the author watched a movie set in NYC, pulled up Google maps, and went for it.

Historia
It’s been a decade since Trumanell Branson disappeared, leaving only a bloody handprint behind. Her pretty face still hangs like a watchful queen on the posters on the walls of the town’s Baptist church, the police station, and in the high school. They all promise the same thing: We will find you. Meanwhile, Tru's brother, Wyatt, lives as a pariah in the desolation of the old family house, cleared of wrongdoing by the police but tried and sentenced in the court of public opinion and in a new documentary about the crime.

Not much of a mystery, but beautifully done
Revisado: 06-15-22
Really great narrators and strong writing. The word "atmospheric" (which appears in many of the reviews) is perfect.
The book is divided in two halves, each with a different first person female protagonist: Odette, a rooky police officer narrates the first section, and Angel, a teenage runaway who Odette helps to protect narrates the second.
The central mystery concerns the disappearance (and likely murder) of Trumanell and Frank Branson, a father and daughter who vanished 10 years before the start of the story. As a 16-year-old, Odette visited the Branson's home the night of the disappearance to meet up with Wyatt Branson, Trumanell's younger brother and Odette's boyfriend. The same night, she was in a horrible car accident, and lost one of her legs. In a slightly heavy-handed but nevertheless compelling parallel, Angel has similarly lost one of her eyes. When an adult Wyatt finds Angel alone and hurt on the side of the highway, Odette steps in to help the girl. At the same time, her obsessive investigation into Trumanell's cold case begins to heat up.
The book is not at all "twisty" (another word which appears in a lot of the reviews). I thought that the killer's identity was fairly clear from about halfway through Odette's part of the story, There isn't really enough emotional growth or character development to carry the story without a mystery. Some of the things that the characters miss or don't understand seem unrealistic, given their backgrounds and experiences. But I was entertained!

Historia
An advertisement has been placed (again!) by the wealthy and eccentric Parloni Sisters. The salary is generous and the employers are 90 years old, so how hard could the job be? Well, none have lasted longer than a week. Most boys leave in tears. Ruthie Midona will work in Providence’s front office, and be at the Parlonis' beck and call, forever. That’s sort of her life plan. If Ruthie can run the place in her almost-retired bosses’ absence, with no hijinks/hiccups, she has a shot at becoming the new manager.

Very sweet
Revisado: 10-06-21
Sweet, well structured and perfectly paced.
My only quibble is with the narrator, The author uses a lot of British (or maybe Aussie?) idioms, and the narrator is American, creating a kind of weird juxtaposition.

Historia
Claire DeWitt, the hard-living and tough-talking private investigator, has always been something of a detective. As a young girl growing up in Brooklyn, Claire and her two best friends, Tracy and Kelly, solved many cases together and were inseparable - until the day Tracy vanished without a trace. That is still the only case Claire ever failed to solve. Later, in her 20s, Claire is in Los Angeles trying to get her PI license by taking on a cold case that has stumped the LAPD. Today, Claire is on her way to Las Vegas from San Francisco when she’s almost killed by a homicidal driver. As these three narratives converge, some mysteries are solved and others continue to haunt.

I miss the narrator from the first two books!
Revisado: 08-04-20
The original narrator had this great, gravely voice. The new narrator's voice is much softer, and she cannot pronounce "Andre" or "détection." Switching narrators mid-series is the worst!

Enjoyable, but obvious
Revisado: 10-20-11
I liked this recording quite a bit--the reader was versatile and compelling (except for the American accents, which were hilarious) and Kate Morton's prose is strong.
My only complaint is that the *mystery* at the heart of the story is not very mysterious at all, and it can be a bit frustrating to watch the characters debate and stumble around a question the author has already resolved for her readership.
