Historia
In 2010, the words “earthquake swarm” entered the lexicon in Oklahoma. That same year, a trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia—including his iconic crystal-encrusted white glove—was sold at auction for over $1 million to a guy who was, officially, just the lowly forestry minister of the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea. And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peacocks, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon.

A MUST LISTEN; plots, subplots. What a storyteller!
Revisado: 01-11-23
Rachel weaves back and forth across the globe, and back and forth in time, using this deft warp and weft storytelling technique to create a tapestry of the global oil and gas industry, while entertaining us with the sad, the funny and the bizarre in subplots and anecdotes along the way.
We see the resource curse manifest small and large, did you know Russia, despite its oil and gas wealth, and its corrupt Olympic folly, doesn’t even have a highway from Moscow to the east? Hasn’t built multi lane roads in decades? It’s health system has fallen so behind that Women have 6x worse cardiovascular outcomes than the west?
I’m not all the way through, there is so much here… I am listening chapter by chapter in tandem with other books, but never loose the thread it’s so well written and read.
I can’t imagine reading this on paper, Rachel’s word-skill is best conveyed in her own tones. Thank you audio books!

Great book for new lesbians
Revisado: 08-27-22
I read this when I was 20 and in my first lesbian relationship. I always remember it as one of my favorite most influential books. Couldn’t remember why.
38 years later, I’ve re-listened here. The story is sweet, the reading is excellent, and though it’s a lovely coming of age book, now that I’ve been out all these years, it’s hard to remember why this impacted me so profoundly.
But I wish that coming out enjoyment for all you young lesbians :)

Historia
Teenage girls are taking courses of testosterone and disfiguring their bodies. Parents are undermined; experts are over-relied upon; dissenters in science and medicine are intimidated; free speech truckles under renewed attack; socialized medicine bears hidden consequences; and an intersectional era has arisen in which the desire to escape a dominant identity encourages individuals to take cover in victim groups. Every person who has ever had a skeptical thought about the sudden rush toward a non-binary future but been afraid to express it - this book is for you.

compelling & well read
Revisado: 08-27-22
Listened start to end. Shrier makes a compelling case something is going wrong for young girls with an epidemic of trans identification and girls that way outstrips boys. Triad looks at possible causes, case studies, the role of experts and reviews of older trans folks.
Well worth the read if you are at all concerned about young girls living their best lives.

Narrator too annoying. Couldn’t get past it
Revisado: 01-16-22
Only listened to forst 2 chapters ; “I’m an English actor” voice, all from the nose, so irritating I couldn’t follow the words. His accents were really amateur sounding, and the vocal rhythm and tone didn’t vary between characters. Couldn’t ever believe a real person was actually speaking in the dialogue, and dialogue and narrative blurred in to one blah.
Usually the story gets me through narrators I’m not fond of, but not this one. Couldn’t even tell you what’s happened so far except someone died and someone is called a quiet American. Oh well, I’ll have to watch the movie to find out what happened in this famous classic novel.
Still listening as I wrote this; it’s written in the first person; if a real person was narrating his own story it would not sound like someone reading a book. Does not bring any life to the page.

Historia
People ask me when I first knew I was female. Would you believe me if I told you that I don't know if I've ever known, since I don't really know what a woman is, other than a concept that exists outside me - still, I know that I have felt like one, a woman I mean, yet the only way I first knew was from males? Will you suspend prejudgment long enough to entertain the possibility that gender can be so relative?

Historia
In the summer of 1990, Eddie Vedder left the surf and sun in San Diego to join a group of friends working to put a new band together in the Seattle underground. Within months, they were anything but underground; they’d found their lead singer, and Vedder went on to lead Pearl Jam on a global takeover of ‘90s culture. In this latest edition of Audible’s Words + Music series, Vedder dives deep, reflecting on a life at the intersection of art, sensitivity, and masculinity.

This’ll be a wired review…
Revisado: 12-20-21
So with end of all-day headache, curled in chair w cat, picked this randomly to try and nap by.. No ideA who he is. Had heard of Pearl Jam but I was 6000 miles away at the time hearing a different music scene. Grunge was a word in a far off haze. So appropriate that I listened in dream space. From there I could hear the lilt of his speaking voice. Then he sang Porch and I wondered why I was trying to nap to such a high energy song, yet in dream space a whole other story unfolded over and in the sound of this song, such as I can’t explain in words or rightly remember. The song, unplugged, was raw and fresh and honest, though I could not understand it. After the podcast and I woke up I replayed Porch. Heard the amazing quality of his singing voice and raw authenticity… still didn’t understand but will go find lyrics. My point is the art spoke even in the fog of dream. In conscious waking I will listen again and seek out the work of Pearl Jam that I missed 30y ago. I heard Eddy reel off all the women singers who influenced him and they all influenced me too. I start w that common ground.

Historia
“This isn't strictly speaking an instructional manual, but a work of comedic philosophy.” Elvis Costello - songwriter, singer, author, and Fender Jazzmaster known to his admirers as “The Little Hands of Concrete” - spins his tale with wit, grit, and spit to spare. How to Play the Guitar and Y, Costello’s new entry into Audible’s Words + Music series, combines recitation, impersonation, and musical illustration to show you how to turn a three-chord trick into a four-chord caper and let your curiosity take you where it will.

Didn’t say abridged anywhere
Revisado: 12-14-21
Seemed so thin for a Tony hillerman but was over in 4 chapters, then realized why. It was cut down, with only key plot elements left.
Free, so can’t complain- but miss the hillerman experience. A way to dip your toe into his writing- but read a FULL novel and don’t judge the writer on this version
Reader makes female and child characters sound whiny in all their dialogue which was annoying
