I don’t know who Dr. Scarpetta gives bigger blue balls, her readers, or Pete Marino! This is the 2nd book in a row where the ending is rushed and abrupt leaving the reader (listener) dissatisfied and bewildered. The first 5 books were amazing; well thought out and felt truly resolved. I hope the next one is better. Re the narrator: her breathiness used to bother me too but I’ve gotten used to it and I enjoy her characterizations.

Captivating From Start to Finish

King has done it again; a great story with beautifully real people and monsters that look like the nice old couple next door. I “devoured” this book (ahem), and you will too!

Epic Scale, Poor Reader

This trilogy is on a cosmic scale, quite literally. The first book was my favorite largely because the reader was great. Books 2 & 3 were read by somebody else and he was AWFUL. If I didn’t know better I would have thought it was a computer generated voice reading the text! Way to ruin an epic story, guys! The material is sometimes complex enough without having what amounts to Stephen Hawking’s chair reading it…I only finished it to see how it ended because the material itself was so compelling and I’d already invested many, many hours into it. TLDR: great story, horrible narration for books 2&3.

Intriguing and Addictive

An incredibly intriguing and addictive listen of a tragic mysterious life and ultimately, death. Anticlimactic due to remaining unsolved but worth a listen nonetheless. An unexpected side note: I found Emmon’s poetry quite moving and beautiful.

Better and better...

This series just gets better and better. Steven Pacey has quickly become my favorite reader and Abercrombie my favorite author. I can’t praise this series enough.
Say one thing about The First Law...say it’s brilliant!!!!

Something Special

Wow! I haven’t been this excited about a fantasy series since ASOIAF...except that I think this is better! Amazing writing and character development mixed with gritty intrigue. I’d recommend this book to any fans of fantasy and even historical fiction. An added bonus: the narrator Steven Pacey is one of the best I’ve ever heard and I’ve listened to hundreds of audiobooks. I can’t wait to begin book two!

Amazing Sequel

I began listening to the books after watching and enjoying the Netflix trilogy. Being more detailed, the books are incredible! Emma Gregory does a great job of narrating this one but I got used to the narrator of part one and I can’t stand when they change readers in the middle of a series! It’s like when they change actors in a show for the same character! What’s more, Gregory mispronounces several words/names in Spanish/Castilian which were pronounced correctly by the excellent reader of book one. Small gripes but worth mentioning. Can’t wait to listen to the final part!
