Historia
The emperor's reign has lasted for decades, his mastery of bone shard magic powering the animal-like constructs that maintain law and order. But now his rule is failing, and revolution is sweeping across the Empire's many islands. Lin is the emperor's daughter and spends her days trapped in a palace of locked doors and dark secrets. When her father refuses to recognise her as heir to the throne, she vows to prove her worth by mastering the forbidden art of bone shard magic.

Looking forward to the next one
Revisado: 05-13-21
I enjoyed the story and the world-building. The ending felt a little rushed and blunted as if there originally had been more.
Narration-- there have been a lot of reviews about the narration.
I think Emily Woo Zellar did a great job narrating. While some have reviewed her negatively, in my opinion, the issues rest with the post-production, not with the narrator. Natalie Naudus' performance was fine. She does drag out words, often in a monotone voice (think Kim Kardashian) which is a personal pet peeve of mine, and her pacing sometimes sounded a little awkward, like run-on sentances. Feodor Chin's choice for the voice of Mephi a little odd but otherwise enjoyable.
Kudos to the audio publisher for actually hiring Asian performers.

A solid sequel
Revisado: 08-29-20
The plot was fine but not as tight as the Andrews’ other work. Maybe because it is setting up for the next book? I did love that the usual romance tropes were flipped.
The narration is slow and flat. I recommend listening at 1.2x speed. I wish the producers had selected a narrator with a Texas or southern accent.

Poor Audio Quality
Revisado: 06-13-19
The story and the narration are fantastic but the audio quality is poor. It was recorded in 2002 but with technology such as it is, I wish Listening Library or Audible would have invested in remastering the recording.

Historia
Throughout the vast lands controlled by the Ironship Trading Syndicate, nothing is more prized than the blood of drakes. Harvested from captive or hunted Reds, Greens, Blues, and Blacks, it can be distilled into elixirs that bestow fearsome powers on the rare men and women known as the Blood-blessed. But not many know the truth: that the lines of drakes are weakening. If they fail, war with the neighboring Corvantine Empire will follow swiftly.

Had to return
Revisado: 05-09-19
The narrator was so atrocious that I had to stop after only a few chapters. Absolutely no character variations making it near impossible to understand who is speaking, no emotional inflections, and monotone to the point where it is difficult to differentiate text from dialog. I ended up returning it which is unfortunate because it seems like an interesting plot.

Narration
Revisado: 02-19-18
The story was good, if difficult to follow in the beginning. There were times I had to stop and do some Google searches to see if I should read one of the stand alone novels first.
My only real complaint is the narrator. He doesn’t fit the characters or story at all. He voice sounds like radio DJ Casey Kasem with the dramatic skills of a high school drama club member. I almost stopped listening by the second chapter. I am disappointed to see that they keep the same narrator through the series. Someone like Steve West would have been a much more appropriate choice.
