Gripping Interlinked Short Stories

Cleverly conceived, each self-contained story is centered on an odious main character. Thriller, absolutely. Fun, yes very.

Historia
Margot and James are broken up—for good this time. James made sure of it when he dropped the bomb on Margot: that he doesn’t want kids, ever. Then, on the biggest morning of his life, James—an ambitious lawyer at a high-powered firm—wakes up pregnant. He realizes with dread that he is part of a recent epidemic of men suddenly and inexplicably becoming pregnant. His condition obvious to the higher-ups, James is denied the promotion he was expecting, sending him reeling.

Masterfully Told Thriller
Revisado: 10-24-24
The two person narration was flawless and the tension was, for the most part, well sustained. All characters were fleshed out beautifully with the exception of the twins, Chris and Lynette. They were too one-dimensional, too cliche as the unrepentant and cruel characters. This is in contrast to all the other personages which have redeeming qualities which making them more realistic and relatable.
The scenes and juxtapositioning of time lines are wonderfully wrought.

Tragic and touching
Revisado: 09-24-24
The writing here is superb, The weaving of the past (1980’s) into present (2015) was masterful. And though those of us who lived through the horror of AIDS and the ugly indifference with which it was met by government officials, know how the story ended for far too many, it holds the reader in suspense at many points. It definitely deserved to be nominated for a Pulitzer.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

There is absolutely nothing I disliked in this novel. The writing is smart, funny and touching. Many of the characters have colorfully depicted backstories which intertwine. Another deserving prize-worthy novel by a super-talented author.

Historia
It was the story that shocked the nation and captured headlines for more than a year. In January 2001, Diane Alexis Whipple bled to death in the hallway of her ritzy Pacific Heights apartment building when she was mauled by two Presa Canarios, a vicious breed of attack dog imported from the Canary Islands. After the lethal attack, animal experts testified that the dogs could not have been stopped, explaining that they had entered a frenzy called the "Red Zone".

Horrible narration, well researched book
Revisado: 05-26-22
The narrator mispronounced the names Arayan, Hallinan and several common words. Who edited or listened to this before releasing it?!
The book itself was well researched and might have made a good read. Listening to it was a chore and I skipped large segments. I’m going to ask to return it.

Not my usual genre or language
Revisado: 04-09-22
I read the previous comments and wasn’t sure if I’d like this book, nor get farther than the first few chapters.
However, it held my interest and gave me a curious and clever protagonist to follow. It was jarring at first, the breaks for dramatization, but I grew to become accustomed to them if not appreciate the change.
Hilary Huber has an agreeable, easy voice and her narration is excellent.
Despite the critics and my own tastes in literature, I very much enjoyed this story. It’s well worth the listen.

On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand’s godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. But an attempt on the elderly man’s life sends Armand, his wife, Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded works of art. It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades.

Among the Best Gamache yet
Revisado: 02-28-21
I’ve enjoyed this series since its beginning and was very saddened when narrator Ralph Cosham died.
This particularly novel is as meticulously researched, with mouth watering descriptions of food and fully realized scenes.
And the change of scene Quebec to Paris was refreshing.
The current narrator’s voice carried the warmth and authority one is accustomed to hearing as Gamache.
I especially loved the further expansion on the family relationships and history.

As with all Cara Black novels, the writing is superb.
I had a difficult time, however, with the breathy, over-dramatic voice of the reader.
