Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

Great Storytelling
Revisado: 04-14-24
The prose and narration made this classic so interesting to hear again.
There were places of the story that are so convoluted I missed my page margins for making notes, but still a wonderful read.

Historia
When X—an iconoclastic artist and shape-shifter—falls dead in her office, her widow CM, wild with grief, hurls herself into writing X's biography. Though X was recognized as a crucial creative force of her era, she kept a tight grip on her life story. In CM's quest to unravel it, she opens a Pandora’s box of secrets and destruction. All the while, she immerses herself in the history of the Southern Territory, a fascist theocracy that split from the rest of the country after World War II, as it is finally, in the present day, forced into an uneasy reunification.

Unrealistic emotional drama
Revisado: 02-19-24
This story takes on a not uncommon situation in marriage with great disservice.
The plot was not about stepping outside your marriage vows. It is about never stepping in, deceiving someone into sacrificing their youth for your self serving motives. It makes a mockery of the human psyche and basic human decency.
The wife's continual anger and anguish that causes her to lash out at strangers but to not have enough anger at her husbands, intentional and premeditated betrayal of eighteen years to even address him on the subject.
It feels fabricated and pretentious to have this woman lashing out physically and emotionally, having a constant internal dialogue of anger and anguish but she is immediately able from the beginning to be "understand how difficult" it must have been for her husband. That is a place it takes a lot of time to arrive at with this kind of betrayal that is basically predatory, catfishing, and depriving a person of the one life they have - in love, in marriage, parenting, your whole personhood. I was uncomfortable and offended by the bizarre internal story line of all the characters. Even the husband goes from being a 20 year liar and cold, narcissist to someone who empathizes so deeply that he is willing to sacrifice the career he has been protecting at the expense of everyone.
I would have been less irritated by this story if it had just been boring instead of so demeaning to the plot and characters.
The narration suffered from the story.

Lucas Goodgame lives in Majestic, Pennsylvania, a quaint suburb that has been torn apart by a recent tragedy. Everyone in Majestic sees Lucas as a hero—everyone, that is, except Lucas himself. Insisting that his deceased wife, Darcy, visits him every night in the form of an angel, Lucas spends his time writing letters to his former Jungian analyst Karl. It is only when Eli, an 18-year-old young man whom the community has ostracized, begins camping out in Lucas’s backyard that an unlikely alliance takes shape and the two begin a journey to heal their neighbors and themselves.

Historia
In his subtle and engaging investigation into the life and times of Jesus, Thomas Cahill shows us Jesus from his birth to his execution through the eyes of those who knew him and in the context of his time—a time when the Jews were struggling to maintain their beliefs under overlords who imposed their worldview on their subjects. Here is Jesus the loving friend, itinerate preacher, and quiet revolutionary, whose words and actions inspired his followers to journey throughout the Roman world and speak the truth he instilled.

A Historical Adventure about Humanity
Revisado: 01-08-24
I love how this important theological history reads like a conversation with the most interesting storyteller you've ever met.
Cahill tells history with deep knowledge, understanding and fresh perspective. Unbiased, compassionate and factually authentic.
I read this book and the Hinges of History series at least once a year to renew my faith in humanity. That no matter how hateful we humans become, we are evolving and there is hope for our spiritual selves.

Deep Period Detail in an interesting story
Revisado: 08-28-23
I was afraid this would run too much to a "romance" but was soon intrigued by interesting culture of the period. Medical, political, religious, social custom all filled the story with interest. Gregory is a treasure!
