Historia
In a tropical country where shadowy political affairs lurk behind the scenes of its glamorous film industry, three people maneuver inside a high-stakes game of statecraft and espionage: Lillian, a reluctant diplomat serving a fascist nation; Aristide, an expatriate film director running from lost love and a criminal past; and Cordelia, a former cabaret stripper turned legendary revolutionary. Each one harbors dangerous knowledge that can upturn a nation. When their fates collide, machinations are put into play, unexpected alliances are built, and long-held secrets are exposed.

Magnificent story, just what I wanted
Revisado: 02-21-19
What an absolutely marvelous thing. I can not believe how many emotions I felt listening to this.
Mary Robinette Kowal’s performance made this book even better, as impossible as that seems. The various accents added so much to the story, especially when Ari dips in and out of his burr. I was weeping by the end, absolutely gorgeous.

But Ingray and her charge return to her home to find their planet in political turmoil, at the heart of an escalating interstellar conflict. Together, they must make a new plan to salvage Ingray's future and her world, before they are lost to her for good.

Adjoa Andoh is an amazing narrator
Revisado: 01-28-19
What a spectacular book, and it was totally enhanced by Adjoa Andoh’s narration. I like a protagonist that has realistic reactions! Crying during something upsetting is TOTALLY REASONABLE, and I loved that she was terrified, but did what needed to be done.

Historia
The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Historia
Covert agent Cyril DePaul thinks he's good at keeping secrets, especially from Aristide Makricosta. They suit each other: Aristide turns a blind eye to Cyril's clandestine affairs, and Cyril keeps his lover's moonlighting job as a smuggler under wraps. Cyril participates in a mission that leads to disastrous results, leaving smoke from various political fires smoldering throughout the city. Shielding Aristide from the expected fallout isn't easy, though.

The narration made this book for me
Revisado: 11-10-18
This was a book that I didn’t even know I needed. I would like to talk to Aristide all night.
So much snark in this book. So much glitter and corruption. It feels unpleasantly familiar, and I’m hoping that the later books have more hope. This one was p-p-positively decadent, darling, in a glorious way. It’s making me wonder - can you have that decadence and showmanship and the fun smuggling without corruption and marginalized folks being hurt? I don’t know if you can.
Also, MRK’s narration totally made this for me. The various accents went in PERFECTLY. Cordelia, Cyril, Ari and others all had just the right tones that fit them so well. Ari’s code switching, I particularly loved.
And the transition from Cyril’s voice into Aristide’s in The Letter had me gasping and broke my heart. AUGH.
I’m so excited that I get to just start book 2 ASAP!
