Story was slow in parts
Revisado: 04-10-24
The readers sounded too similar. Eleanor should have had a more distinctive voice. It's hard to believe she had that much influence over her husband. Where did Mary get her money? Could it have come from the Communists? Is that why she was being investigated by the FBI?

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Heartbreaking but hopeful
Revisado: 07-17-23
So sad but hard to put down. The characters and setting were well researched. The description of the area when Demon returned painted a picture of the mountains that I know and love. The narrator's accent was authentic but wish there had been less profanity.

Historia
Aging Herb’s charmed life with his dear wife, Susan, in their Key West house is coming undone. Susan now needs constant care, and Herb is in denial about his own ailing health. The one bright spot is the arrival of an endlessly optimistic manicurist calling herself Renee. She sings to Susan during manicures, gets her to paint, and brings her a sense of contentment. But then Herb and Susan’s adult children arrive to stage an intervention on their stubborn, independent father, and as a consequence, Renee’s gig with Susan—and her grand plans for her own life—start to unravel as well.

A book of hope and determination
Revisado: 06-04-23
It took a couple of chapters to get into the book but then I couldn't stop listening. I wish there was more of an ending but there was hope. The story gave insight into sexual exploitation. There was too much profanity and I didn't like the narrator's voice which was whiny. Should have had a more natural voice with a mountain accent. I have been reading Lee Smith's books for years and love her writing.

I didn't realize until I began reading that this was a book for adolescents. Nice story for younger folks.

Historia
On a rainy, cold day in November, young Victor - a nomadic, scrappy teenager who's run away from home - sets out to sell as much marijuana as possible to the throng of WTO demonstrators determined to shut down the city. With the proceeds, he plans to buy a plane ticket and leave Seattle forever, but it quickly becomes clear that the history-making 50,000 antiglobalization protestors - from anarchists to environmentalists to teamsters - are testing the patience of the police, and what started out as a peaceful protest is threatening to erupt into violence.

Hated the book and was so glad to finish it.
Revisado: 01-26-19
Unfortunately, I had to lead the discussion with my book group so I had to read it. When I asked if anyone liked it, no one did. Anarchist and a waste of time.

Historia
For the inimitable Lee Smith, place is paramount. For 45 years, her fiction has lived and breathed with the rhythms and people of the Appalachian South. But never before has she written her own story. Set deep in the rugged Appalachian Mountains, the Grundy of Lee Smith's youth was a place of coal miners, mountain music, and her daddy's dimestore. It was in that dimestore - listening to customers and inventing life histories for the store's dolls - that she began to learn the craft of storytelling.
