Revisado: 05-22-20
This novel reads much like others I have read. There is nothing new in the predictable plot. The history of Spain and Chile could have been gotten from Wikipedia. The only thing good was the quotes from Neruda. I’m sorry, because Allende’s first book is one of the best I have ever read.

Like how did she get the OK to write this and include so many details that might hurt other agents? I also don’t like her reading style — too monotone. But it was still and interesting story with great detail and beauty as well as strife.

Someone’s review in here says that the book is too long. I say, not long enough!Well-developed characters, excellent reading. Great team writer and narrator—I recommend The Alice Network if you liked this one. The Huntress has rich detail, great scenes, new information I didn’t know about the “Night Witches.” Great historical novel with a triumphant ending.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

This is a really good book beautifully read, but so difficult to listen to. I mean, the story is gripping but the agony of France and its people in WWII is painful.

Historia
Richard Papen had never been to New England before his 19th year. Then he arrived at Hampeden College and quickly became seduced by the sweet, dark rhythms of campus life—in particular by an elite group of five students, Greek scholars, worldly, self-assured, and at first glance, highly unapproachable. Yet as Richard was accepted and drawn into their inner circle, he learned a terrifying secret that bound them to one another...a secret about an incident in the woods in the dead of night where an ancient rite was brough to brutal life...and lead to a gruesome death.

Needs a different narrator
Revisado: 04-26-19
A woman reading a book that is supposed to be from a man’s perspective is hard to get. Also, the character is supposed to be from California but the reader (the author) has an accent. Also, she doesn’t do the other characters’ voices very well.
The book itself was OK—very good descriptions and a very good flow to the writing. But it’s not something that I would read or listen to again.
Some details were odd — how he could have a job but not go for days on end. Why he thought the professor so wonderful (that character wasn’t very well-developed — we just have to take it for granted).
That said, having listened to this and to “The Goldfinch” I am looking forward to the next Donna Tartt book.

But now The Sagan Diary shows us Sagan from another point of view: her own, as she prepares to leave military life and join her new husband and adopted daughter on a colony world.

Couldn't even finish it
Revisado: 07-07-17
Tedious & random. No color, especially in the reader's voice. If this is supposed to be Jane's thoughts it's not what I expected. Sounds more computer-generated, with too many complicated words. Doesn't sound like a woman's mind no matter how young that mind is. Wish I could get my money back.

Brief history of white European males

Extremely and frustratingly focused on white Europeans, almost no women mentioned, and no points of view fro Africans or Chinese or Latinos. Not a true history. Pretty good in detail though if this is where you start. Very sad ending.

Thanks Graham Norton for time well spent listening to your book. And thanks for reminding me that life is a "come as you are affair." I am also a big fan of your show and am glad you thought the episode with Matt Damon was one of the best.
