Historia
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

Such a realistic and sad story
Revisado: 04-12-18
The narration by Atossa Leoni was exquisite. I struggled finishing the book. One listens with a heavy heart because the daily struggles of the women in the book are un fathomable.

Such an Important book yet a difficult listening
Revisado: 08-16-17
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
For the person interested in broadening ones mind into addiction treatment and approaches this is a reasonably good book. In that regard I would recommend it. However, something went wrong in the recording. I found it to be almost impossible to listen to. The voice of the narrator is cold, very educational, almost like a machine. The book does not flow and I just could not listen to it for more than 10 minutes at a time. It reads like a text book. I'm not sure it is suitable for an audio book
If you’ve listened to books by the authors before, how does this one compare?
I have not
Would you be willing to try another one of Randye Kaye’s performances?
Hell No!
Did Beyond Addiction inspire you to do anything?
Not at the moment

Is there anything you would change about this book?
Yes, the structure, the Author's writing is really smug with no apparent reason.
Was This Naked Mind: Control Alcohol worth the listening time?
No, part of it was good but the rest was tiring and demagogic

Would you listen to In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts again? Why?
I found the book to be a great source of information in understanding the biology of addiction and increasing one's empathy toward addicts. I LOVED the narration by Daniel Mate' and I found the extremely humanitarian approach by Dr. Mate' to be of a great inspiration to me. I will definitely listen again to understand the mechanics of the biological process.
What was one of the most memorable moments of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts?
The biological explanation
Have you listened to any of Daniel Maté’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I haven't but I should, He's fabulous

"See for yourself!" was the clarion call of the 1600s. Natural philosophers threw off the yoke of ancient authority, peered at nature with microscopes and telescopes, and ignited the scientific revolution. Artists investigated nature with lenses and created paintings filled with realistic effects of light and shadow. The hub of this optical innovation was the small Dutch city of Delft.

Historical book about the evolution of optics through the eyes of two geniuses
Revisado: 04-12-17
I came to this book through my love of Vermeer, hoping to learn more about this genius. I got to know Van Leeuwenhoek through the process. However as I'm not an optics fan. I found the book to be very technically detailed and..a bit boring. The amount of physicists, philosophers and others mentioned was a bit too much. All in all a good book. Just not for the layperson art lover

Historia
In the tradition of John Richardson's Picasso, a commanding new biography of the Italian master's tumultuous life and mysterious death. For four hundred years Caravaggio's (1571-1610) staggering artistic achievements have thrilled viewers, yet his volatile personal trajectory - the murder of Ranuccio Tomasini, the doubt surrounding Caravaggio's sexuality, the chain of events that began with his imprisonment on Malta and ended with his premature death - has long confounded historians.

A must read for Caravaggio fans. read with the paintings in hand
Revisado: 03-25-17
The best and most thorough biography of Caravaggio I have stumbled upon. Seems to make sense in many previous assumptions about missing information. The narraration is mind blowing!!! My only concern had to do with the feeling that too often the author dealt with minute information that made the story line feel too cumbersome.

Historia
Jan van Eyck's Ghent Altarpiece is on any art historian's list of the 10 most important paintings ever made. Often referred to by the subject of its central panel, the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, it represents the fulcrum between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It is also the most frequently stolen artwork of all time.

I found this book a hard read
Revisado: 03-25-17
I am acquainted with Noah Charney's podcast and Ted lectures. Found the subject interesting. In addition I wanted to learn more about Jan Van-Eyck and the book has a great biography of his. Beyond that, I found it difficult to follow the thread of information and the book seemed like a shopping list of names, events etc. Eventually I lost interest in the book
