One of the best YA gay novels I've read!
Revisado: 06-11-24
While clearly this was a story centered around the Dollywood theme park, I kept laughing at the fact that they couldn't secure copyright to use Dolly personally. I wish when I was these characters ages, there would have been a book like this for me to read. The tropes in this one were subtle enough to not be distracting from the overall plot.
Although I finished this book a couple months ago, it's on I think about often as it truly was entertaining and funny.
I fully recommend if you are in the rainbow mafia!

Historia
Max Remus couldn't care less about finding his mate—unlike the rest of his fate-obsessed pack. He totally prefers hanging with his bestie, eating his dad's steak sandwiches, and drawing in his trusty sketchbook. But all that is about to change at the Blue Moon Festival—a summer camp where Elite Pack wolves go to find their mates. The festival is a rite of passage for every teen werewolf, and this year's festival will be one to howl home about. The alpha's son, Jasper Apollo, is attending for the first time.

Gay Twilight... or gayER New Moon...
Revisado: 06-11-24
While I'm not disappointed that I read this one, I do however wish that it didn't remind me of better novels throughout the performance. I found myself frustrated that at certain points I would say to myself, "Just like Twilight," or "Just like the troll in the dungeon," in Harry Potter.
This novel is certainly more directed to the 13-18 crowd, it had some good moments. The plot twist revealing the villain was good, until motivation was revealed.
Worth it if you'd like some background noise to listen to, but not a life changing story.

Sheldon Soleskin should be having a horrible day. Even though he’s been unexpectedly transferred to a new school right before the holidays, has only one day to set up his new classroom, and just discovered his twin sister's been hiding an invitation to his ex-boyfriend’s Christmas Eve wedding, he’s still ready to take on the world with a smile on his face and a skip in his step. Theo Berenson just wants to be left alone to his custodial duties. But when the chipper new first-grade teacher needs help moving furniture the Sunday after Thanksgiving, he's forced to do something he detests.

A good read if you have a credit to spare
Revisado: 06-11-24
Just finished this one and I honestly had a smile on my face through most of the read. Some of the sexier parts seemed out of place with the rest of the story and were pretty distracting from the rest of the plot. There was a throw-away scene between Theodore and the school principal which could have been expanded on or left out entirely without making a difference to the plot.
The final 30 minutes or so seemed the most slapped together for a finale. Sheldon having a hissy-fit near the end was an unnecessary plot point. The story has a lot of themes that could have been edited to focus more on true character development. There's 30 y/o virgin, PTSD, body dis-morphia, parents abandoning their gay child, twins, opposites attract, ex getting married, and the list goes on. Not ALL the tropes are necessary.
Again, with all that being said, I was entertained throughout and do recommend to fellow LGBT+++ looking for a decent story.

Historia
England, 1904. Two years ago, Captain Archie Curtis lost his friends, fingers, and future to a terrible military accident. Alone, purposeless, and angry, Curtis is determined to discover if he and his comrades were the victims of fate, or of sabotage. Curtis's search takes him to an isolated, ultra-modern country house, where he meets and instantly clashes with fellow guest Daniel da Silva. Effete, decadent, foreign, and all-too-obviously queer, the sophisticated poet is everything the straightforward British officer fears and distrusts.

It was like Sherlock Holmes but even gayer!
Revisado: 02-02-24
As a fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and most of the Sherlock Holmes stories, this one was a pretty entertaining listen. Don't get me wrong, this one won't be talked about next century, but it follows that murder mystery, blackmail, who done it vibe that had it's intense moments and left me going out to my car on my lunch breaks to listen to what happens to our heros next. While the reading was pretty standard, some of the affected lines were annoying and distracting. This would be a good story for your collection if you like a gay murder mystery and can tolerate a few explicit scenes.

Historia
Call Me by Your Name first swept across the world in 2007. It is the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy and a summer guest at his parents' cliffside mansion on the Italian Riviera. During the restless summer weeks, unrelenting but buried currents of obsession, fascination, and desire intensify their passion as they test the charged ground between them and verge toward the one thing both already fear they may never truly find again: total intimacy.

A long walk for a small payoff
Revisado: 01-28-24
I listened to this one mostly because I knew it had LGBTQIA+ themes and that it was turned into a film. I haven’t seen the film yet, and after listening to the book I’m not sure I will. While I enjoy a good coming of age story set it a previous time period, some what could have been a more romantic story, is clouded up by a peach sequence, shared bathroom sequence, and less than satisfying ending. I appreciate a different perspective in the genre but this one just wasn’t for me. I found myself cringing a lot at the story and ended up playing the audiobook at a faster speed just to get to the end of it. Not bad, but not great.

Historia
When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, genius—his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse.

Cute listen and fun story!
Revisado: 01-28-24
As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community in my mid to mid 40’s 😉 this was a pretty fun and cute love story. While most of the story was easy to follow, the reading of the text and email conversations became tiresome. However, that really is one of the few shortcomings of this reading. Aspects of the story can be predicable but it is still fun, funny, and put a smile on my face throughout the listen. I’m also a sucker for a happy ending in gay romance. Sad the film version cut out so many characters from the novel, but such is the world of adaptation. Definitely worth it if you’re on the fence and have a credit to spare!

Far more terrifying than the film version!
Revisado: 05-25-14
Would you consider the audio edition of It to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version and now I never will. This was the one and only time I'll sit through the book. It was too bizarre and random for me to try again.
Would you be willing to try another book from Stephen King? Why or why not?
I probably won't read any more Stephen King. I love to be scared but this was scary on top of disgusting and vulgar. It'll be a very long time before I might entertain the idea of trying to read another of his books, especially if they follow in the same vain.
What does Steven Weber bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I have been watching Steven Weber on the big and small screen since I was a kid. There were many times I could picture his face while doing some of the character voices. He did an okay job for being a screen actor.
If you could take any character from It out to dinner, who would it be and why?
No one really. The sooner I forget that I even read this book, the better.
Any additional comments?
This book is NOT for children and NOT for most adults. Beware that it goes far beyond any dark story you might have read. More often than not it made me uncomfortable to even listen to it. More than once I was ready to stop listening all together and give up on it.

Four decades after it first shook the nation, then the world, William Peter Blatty's thrilling masterwork of faith and demonic possession returns in an even more powerful form. Raw and profane, shocking and blood-chilling, it remains a modern parable of good and evil and perhaps the most terrifying novel ever written.

Almost a frightening as the film version!
Revisado: 05-25-14
If you could sum up The Exorcist in three words, what would they be?
Scary, psychological, intense
Who was your favorite character and why?
Chris, the mother. I found her so compelling. It really forced me to think about what I would do if I was put in her situation.
Have you listened to any of William Peter Blatty and Eliana Shaskan ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I haven't listened to other performances. His voice was exceptional and I'd favor hearing him read again.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There were a couple times I had to stop listening and take a break for a day or so because it was too much. It's pretty rare for me to have such a strong reaction, but this book gave me chills, thrills, and nightmares.
Any additional comments?
Not for the faint of heart, but a classic horror tale that everyone should experience in their lifetime.

Historia
A vicious 15-year-old droog is the central character of this 1963 classic, a frightening fable about good and evil, and the meaning of human freedom. In Anthony Burgess' nightmare vision of the future, where the criminals take over after dark, the story is told by the central character, Alex, who talks in a brutal invented slang that brilliantly renders his and his friends' social pathology.

Not as good as I thought it would be
Revisado: 03-06-14
Would you consider the audio edition of A Clockwork Orange to be better than the print version?
I have not read the print version but I would have probably enjoyed it better. There were too many slang words being said that I don't know how to spell so I can't look them up. Hearing a really British accent saying British slang didn't make for easy listening.
What did you like best about this story?
I really liked the descriptions of the clothes and fashion of the era.
Have you listened to any of Tom Hollander’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was my first time listening to Tom Hollander. He did a great job of bringing an excitement to the narration that fit the storyline.
If you could take any character from A Clockwork Orange out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Clearly it would be Alex. Although lethal, he'd be fun to talk about music with.
Any additional comments?
The last hour of the narration is of the author reading 3 chapters from the book. So the actual story isn't as long as described. It also has a pretty long introduction that is important to hear because it tells the listener an important fact about the end of the UK novel, US novel, and film.
