I really enjoyed this listen
Revisado: 04-19-25
Great story and characters. I was completely engrossed, I listened to the entire series from book one. I found myself wishing that it were on TV —it’s better than most of the shows I’ve tried to watch lately. Please write another one!

Historia
Criminologist Martin Knight lives a gilded life and is a thorn in the side of the police. But then his wife, Liz, goes missing. There is no good explanation and no sign of Martin.... To make things worse, Liz is the ex-girlfriend of DCI Craig Gillard who is drawn into the investigation. Is it just a missing person or something worse? And what relevance do the events around the shocking Girl F case, so taken up by Knight, have to do with the present? The truth is darker than you could ever have imagined.

Great story
Revisado: 08-28-24
I enjoyed listening to this book. The story was great, it was well researched, and the writing was much better than others in its genre. I was slightly uncomfortable with what I felt like was a certain level of sexism- it was well grappled with by the author I think, and balanced by some complex female characters, but still - there was a little too much of it for me. It’s not going to keep me from reading more of this authors’ books, and maybe in one of those books I will encounter a stronger female character who is not evil nor a victim. Fingers crossed. Thanks for a great story overall, and for all the hard work.

Historia
It arrives in the morning. An old-fashioned airmail envelope addressed to Detective Nikki Galena. Inside, on a single sheet of blue airmail paper, are three words: You failed me. The second airmail envelope arrives at Nikki's home address. The same message. Only this time, it's followed by four names: Alexandra Cornfield, Ruth Baker, Bethany Lyons, Leanne Delaney. Four missing women. Four local women whose bodies were never found.

A great series
Revisado: 04-05-24
I really enjoyed this entire series. The stories were engaging, and I appreciated the strong female characters. Although each book had a similar structure, each one was unique enough to hold my interest.

Historia
A skeleton is found in a shallow grave in the churchyard. But this was not an official burial. The victim was murdered decades ago. At the same time, Detective Nikki Galena and her team are investigating the brutal slaying of local businesswoman Madeline Prospero. She was a member of an exclusive and secretive drinking club called The Briar Patch. But they've got no suspects and no one is telling them the truth. Meanwhile, the buried skeleton leads them on a trail to the village of Quintin Eaudyke. This is a troubled place. In the late 70s and 80s a reign of terror was unleashed.

This book series is a fun listen. It gets a little repetitive at times, but is otherwise pretty engaging. A great listen if you like a good mystery.

Historia
A successful film professor and podcaster, Bodie Kane is content to forget her past—the family tragedy that marred her adolescence, her four largely miserable years at a New Hampshire boarding school, and the murder of her former roommate, Thalia Keith, in the spring of their senior year. Though the circumstances surrounding Thalia’s death and the conviction of the school’s athletic trainer, Omar Evans, are hotly debated online, Bodie prefers—needs—to let sleeping dogs lie.

Good, but a little superficial
Revisado: 11-24-23
I mostly enjoyed listening to this story. I am of the same generation as the narrator so I found all the 90’s references to be kind of satisfying. I also enjoyed the nuanced take on cancel culture, as well as the reflections on violence against women. That said, I was a little surprised that the main character was so focused on appearances and critiquing people’s bodies. That felt a little superficial and annoying, as did all of the descriptions of binge drinking. The story itself was interesting, but I think more focus on the internal experiences of the characters would’ve made it more interesting for me.

Can I please live in this book?
Revisado: 02-23-23
This was an absolutely delightful book, down to the last sentence. It’s one of the most truly feminist stories I have ever read, or I guess heard in this case. It’s darkly hilarious, effortlessly inclusive, and even utopian in a queer and witchy kind of way. All the characters were beautifully messy and uniquely themselves, even the villain. A must read, especially for anyone who wants to “hex the patriarchy.” I want to live in this book. Hopefully I’ll be finding my little spoon soon..

Beautiful
Revisado: 03-09-20
Louise Erdrich is an incredible author. I think I would have to be her to write a review that could do this justice but I’ll try- I enjoyed the Night Watchman so much that I’m going to buy a copy so that I can reread it, and so that I can dog ear the pages-there many profound and poetic moments in this book: “what was it to be dreamed of by a bear?” I will be recommending this one widely. Also this book is read by the author, and her voice is wonderful.

Historia
The world as we know it is ending. Evolution has reversed itself, affecting every living creature on earth. Science cannot stop the world from running backward, as woman after woman gives birth to infants that appear to be primitive species of humans. Thirty-two-year-old Cedar Hawk Songmaker, adopted daughter of a pair of big-hearted, open-minded Minneapolis liberals, is as disturbed and uncertain as the rest of America around her. But for Cedar, this change is profound and deeply personal. She is four months pregnant.

Absolutely incredible
Revisado: 11-20-17
There are so many moments in this novel that are incredibly profound and even transcendent- the big questions are explored with reverence, an eye towards great beauty, an empathetic understanding of the human experience, and a rye sense of humor.
