Historia
For Ruthie, the frozen town of Waitsfield, Massachusetts, is all she has ever known. Once home to the country’s oldest and most illustrious families—the Cabots, the Lowells: the “first, best people”—by the tail end of the twentieth century, it is an unforgiving place awash with secrets. Forged in this frigid landscape Ruthie has been dogged by feelings of inadequacy her whole life. Hers is no picturesque New England childhood but one of swap meets and factory seconds and powdered milk. Shame blankets her like the thick snow that regularly buries nearly everything in Waitsfield.

Implausible characters, lots of theology
Revisado: 10-20-19
The characters had interesting backstories, but once they met, I had a hard time keeping the 4 of them clear - they were implausible in the immediate closeness and understanding and symbiosis of the 2 men, and the immediate animosity of the women. It felt more like a platform to expound different versions of Christian theology than a novel

Historia
In this exquisitely written new audiobook by the author of A Paradise Built in Hell, Rebecca Solnit explores the ways we make our lives out of stories, and how we are connected by empathy, by narrative, by imagination. In the course of unpacking some of her own stories - of her mother and her decline from memory loss, of a trip to Iceland, of an illness - Solnit revisits fairytales and entertains other stories.

Revisado: 04-09-19
Some interesting ideas, but I just couldn’t get them to register - the voice was tedious and distracting.
Long winded and self-pitying

Historia
The freezing Antarctic winter shuts supply lines down completely; conditions are too treacherous for planes and boats and the only connection with the rest of the world is satellite hook-up. During the winter of 1999, Dr. Nielsen, the only physician on a staff of 41 people, discovered a lump in her breast. She was forced to perform a biopsy and in June began to treat herself with chemotherapy, in order to insure that she could survive until her rescue in October.

Inspired at the time, but disappointed by the book
Revisado: 08-18-18
Like so many others, I was captivated by Dr Nielsens' story at the time. Her voice catalogues in detail the challenges of practicing medicine in a remote, under-supplied post, but I was left wanting more insight about the human connections and lack thereof. I missed the sense of inspiration, of an ordinary human being rising to an extraordinary challenge.
I kept wanting some insight into the WHY of her being estranged permanently from her kids, of leaving emergency medicine.
For another more reflective voice of a woman in the Antarctic, I recommend Leading on the Edge, Robertson

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Rich, subtle, complex, and full of good food

I loved this - it emerges like a long and slow Russian novel, and is full of deeper complexities. Small details from early in the book reveal their importance in the final climactic scenes.

Historia
"True belonging doesn't require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are." Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW, has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives - experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame, and empathy. In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization.

Pseudoscientific language and rambling stories from someone whose defining childhood trauma was not making the cheerleading squad. I imagine there are useful ideas about the importance of belonging but hard for me to get past chapter 2.

Disappointing and uninspired
Revisado: 11-06-17
I love food and stories of unusual friendship, but this was painful to listen to
It was like listening to menus without much imagination with some tidbits of a weak and poorly edited story mixed in
The authorial voice and the narrators are both annoying. There is little reflection about the characters’ inner lives
The idea of a story unfolding over dinner is interesting but this book is not.

This is another of Moyes stories of mismatched unlikely lovers. I found the first half when they spar verbally more interesting than the sappy love story towards the end. One plus one is much better.
