Historia
Imperious American widow Beatrice Chavender is visiting her sister's country home near London when a most unfortunate thing happens: She takes a bite of inferior ham while having her breakfast. Soon everyone around her is suffering the consequences - her sister, her brother-in-law, the butler, poor Sally, Sally's fiancé, and even Mrs. Chavender's ex-fiancé, "Ham King" J. B. Duff.

A Romantic Comedy in book form
Revisado: 11-18-22
A thoroughly enjoyable Wodehouse novel, with the standard cast of characters. More along the lines of Leave it to Psmith then a Blandings or Jeeves/Wooster.
Simon Vance does a good job of reading.

Historia
Here is one of the greatest English comic novels read by incontrovertible king of English comic audiobook readers, Martin Jarvis. Three men, worried about their health and in search of different experiences, set off 'up the river' in a boat. Jerome's delightful novel, dating from 1900, paints a vivid picture of innocent fun.

Historia
The complete unabridged audiobook of J.R.R Tolkien's The Silmarillion. The Silmarillion is an account of the Elder Days, of the First Age of Tolkien’s world. It is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back, and in whose events some of them such as Elrond and Galadriel took part.

Very well done
Revisado: 02-21-20
To a lover of things Tolkien this audiobook is almost flawless. My only criticism is the music between the parts (about every couple of hours) is too dramatic and orchestral. Almost like video game music. I would have preferred something like music for a Renaissance Bard. It would have evoked a more Elvish motif in my mind. But that is a minor criticism - all in all it was very good.
If you’re new to Middle Earth, this is not the book to start with - to many names, peoples, clans, battles, loves, hates, heros and hierarchies come to fast and without much introduction. Start with The Hobbit and LOTR, and then take on The Silmarillion

John Cleese is the Consumate Screwtape
Revisado: 02-03-17
John Cleese's officious, bureaucratic and, above all, demonic portrayal of the title deceiver seeking and snaring those whom he would devour is pitch perfect. A delight! A wonderful performance of a wonderful book.

Historia
As Hillaire Belloc explains it, one fine day while walking about the town in northern France where he was born, he suddenly decided to take a pilgrimage to Rome. Not just any pilgrimage, mind you. He not only decided to walk the whole way, but he decided to make a beeline for the Holy City, doing everything possible to avoid leaving the straight path.

So much more then a Travelogue
Revisado: 11-10-16
This candid and often humorous journal of Hillaire Belloc's pilgrimage to Rome is a delight. It is so much more than just a travelogue. It gives us a glimpse of Europe before the Great War, the people and the land. It is also a window into the soul of Mr. Belloc. I've read the book twice, and will probably read it again in a few years, I think it that good. It's much better than a brief description would lead you to believe.
The audiobook was quite good as well. At first I didn't think I was going to like it at all. But once past the introduction ("Praise of this Book "), I thought the performance improved markedly and I enjoyed it immensely. He reads Belloc's poetry very well, and does a superb job with the verbal sparring of Auctor and Lector.

Just Awful
Revisado: 03-02-10
This one is a real stinker. Stay away from this unless you are a big fan of new age "spirituality" propaganda. It has wooden characters, a preachy tone and is very condescending towards anyone that would dare to disagree with its world-view. The story goes from bad to worse, and then from worse to worst. The characters are morally vacuous, but the narration assumes they are taking the moral high ground. I couldn't wait for it to finish -- and it wouldn't finish. It tried to transition into a "buddies road trip" type of plot that is almost laughable. My advise, in a word - "Don't."
