Historia
In the summer of 1936, James Agee and Walker Evans set out on assignment for Fortune magazine to explore the daily lives of sharecroppers in the South. Their journey would prove an extraordinary collaboration and a watershed literary event when Let Us Now Praise Famous Men was first published in 1941 to enormous critical acclaim. This unsparing record of place, the people who shaped the land, and the rhythm of their lives is intensely moving and unrelentingly honest, and today, it stands as a poetic tract of its time.

Way too wordy
Revisado: 07-14-24
The author spent so much time describing things that I would actually zone out and forget who or what he was talking about by the time he finished his description. I’ve been listening to audiobooks for decades and, while I have definitely come across books I did not like, I have never before had that happen. This could have been an amazing piece of work with the right editing. The narration was okay considering what he’d had to work with.

Revisado: 08-23-23
If you’ve read JA’s books there is NO new information in this book. Format is choppy, it’s basically a list of book quotes. This author should be glad the novels are not under copyright. Narrator was good, though.

Either this book is VERY bad, or I’ve outgrown VCA
Revisado: 01-21-23
The writer uses a LOT of superfluous words to tell a very poorly developed story. There’s also a ridiculous amount of plot holes. Because of those plot holes as well as the extremely weak and EXTREMELY annoying main characters, I could not force myself to finish the book. I made it through 4 hours but could not keep going because absolutely NOTHING was happening to advance the plot. The tone of the book (at least the part I could get through) kind of reminded me of My Sweet Audrina—the only VCA classic I disliked—but this book was so much worse. I think if the ghostwriter had spent more time fleshing out the backstory instead of repeating the same details over and over…and over…it could have been marginally better. The narrator was okay, she just spoke a little slowly for my taste so I had to adjust the playback speed. In summary, this audiobook was a big fat DNF, because the older I get the more strongly I feel that life is too short to spend it reading or listening to bad books.
I’m a little disappointed that I cannot return it because Audible no longer accepts returns for books that were not purchased with credits (BTW, what the heck, Audible?!?!). The price of the book was less than it is for one credit, so I used my credit for a more expensive book that will, hopefully, be more entertaining.

Historia
Since moving to Mystic Harbor, Maine, I've made it my life's mission to avoid Reese Blackburn at all costs. Sure, he has cheekbones that could cut glass, not to mention bedroom eyes that could melt any girl into a puddle on the floor. Too bad that doesn't change the fact he's completely stab-worthy. When a fun night out on the town turns deadly, I quickly discover the quaint little hamlet of Mystic Harbor houses more than sandy beaches and adorable B&Bs. Beneath the New England charm rests a world where shifters, demons, vampires, and angelic hunters all vie for power.

Just okay
Revisado: 11-28-22
I finished it, and it was not bad, but I have zero motivation to purchase the second book. There were several plot holes and very little world building. A positive is that the story (at least in the first book) is benign enough for young teens to listen to, so I can share it with my 14-year-old daughter.

She had been beaten, burned, slashed with scissors, locked in a closet, and had never been outside of her tenement home in over 7 years. Thanks to the concern and dedication of a missionary named Etta Wheeler, the child was finally saved from her cruel captors.

Dramatized Nonfiction
Revisado: 10-02-22
Can this even be considered nonfiction?? It seems the writers tried to flesh out this story with fictional dialogue. It reads more like a screenplay for a Lifetime movie. All of the actual facts in this book can be found online and will take less than 5 minutes to read.

I was supposed to be going to Harvard on a full ride. I’ve always been excellent at chemistry. Turns out my knack for chemicals was because my mum is a witch and a potions master. Apparently, now I’m going to Fortuna Conservatory instead, something about being the princess of Hell. Something big is happening. My birth wouldn’t have been foretold if it wasn’t. I need to unlock all of my gifts as half angel half witch because whatever is going on, I’ve only scratched the surface.

WORST. NARRATION. EVER.
Revisado: 07-06-20
I liked the story. It wasn’t fine literature, but rather an enjoyable guilty pleasure. But, the narrator was the absolute worst narrator I’ve ever heard. I’ve been an audiobook lover for 20+ years, I’ve listened to tapes, cds, and I own 800+ Audible titles. Never have I heard a narrator I disliked more. Her pronunciation was absolutely terrible!!! I can usually handle a mispronounced word here or there, but she mispronounced main character names throughout the WHOLE BOOK. I can’t fathom what would make the author and director okay with presenting this recording as a finished product for paying customers.
With that said, this series is available on Kindle Unlimited. If you have time to read it the “old-fashioned” way, do that and SAVE YOUR MONEY OR CREDIT.

Painfully MEH
Revisado: 04-08-19
This story does not develop as it progresses. Yeah, I know what’s basically going on, but the author does not set up the plot well, which causes me to not really care what happens to the characters. And the sexy scenes are super awkward. I gave up about 60% through. This author’s YA books are much better.

Decent and Entertaining, but buy book 2 in print..
Revisado: 06-07-17
Yet another YA/NA book with a female main character who makes poor choices. I spent a good part of the book wondering at Tara's lack of common sense. With that said if you don't take the book too seriously it's enjoyable enough, and I was surprised by the ending.
If you do like this book enough to buy book two, I recommend you buy BOOK 2 in print instead of audio OR you download the audio sample first. The reader of book two is different and I found her voice so irritating that I returned the audiobook.

Enjoyable, despite the narration
Revisado: 10-31-16
The story was light and fun--everything I could want in a YA listen. I don't want to give away any of the finale's plot, but I do want to point out that the reader was...well...not great. Actually she was okay until she had to do a voice or accent. Her pace, enunciation, and pronunciation were great, but all of her male characters sounded like a four year old trying to mimic her dad, and most of the aliens and all of the foreigners had bad French-ish accents. Despite this, I truly enjoyed this series and recommend it for those who enjoy fun sci-fi "clean" romance.
