Revisado: 10-11-23
My father and I listened to this audiobook in the final weeks of his life – he on the couch in his office, and I on daily walks. We discussed it over dinner each night, and I truly think it brought him a good deal of comfort as he mentally prepared for the journey he was about to take. For my father's sake, and for the sake of anyone who ever needed a non-religious, evidence-based reason to believe that there may be something beyond this mortal world, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Thank you Dr. Greyson for writing it, and spending your life investigating these things.

I could've listened to 100 hours of this. To hear the amazing, hilarious, heartwarming history of one of the greatest comedies of all time told by the people who lived it (and in their own voices) brought me more joy than just about any other audiobook I've listened to on Audible. Highly, highly recommended.

Historia
Christmas is the single biggest annual event on the planet, a time for merry-making, over-indulgence, peace, goodwill, and the occasional family row. It’s as comfortable and familiar as a pair of old shoes and yet still glittery and exciting. But what do you really know about it? It’s stuffed full of traditions and rituals that most of us have been observing all our lives without having the slightest idea of where they come from.

In a brief three hour plus runtime, author Bryson successfully details myriad lesser-known facts and secret origin stories of traditions we have all come to know and love about Christmas. Extremely well written and dryly funny. Highly recommended.

Historia
How do the most glamorous people in Hollywood behave when they're not in Hollywood? They run the gamut, and Nat Segaloff followed them for 25 years. He started in the staid and stuffy - but also politically tinged and rapidly evolving - city of Boston, then picked up the trail in Los Angeles. In Screen Saver: Private Stories of Public Hollywood, he writes about the celebrities he worked with when they thought they were out of the public eye. These are the scoops about the bad, the beautiful, the boring, and the blessed.

Historia
On December 26, 1973, The Exorcist was released. Within days it had become legend. Moviegoers braved hours-long lines in winter weather to see it. Some audience members famously fainted or vomited. Half a century later, the movie that both inspired and transcends the modern horror genre has lost none of its power to terrify and unsettle. The Exorcist Legacy reveals the complete story of this cultural phenomenon, from the real-life exorcism in 1949 Maryland that inspired William Peter Blatty's bestselling novel on which the movie is based, to its many sequels, prequels, TV series, and homages.

Wonderfully detailed, so-so narrator
Revisado: 06-23-23
For fans of James Bond and film music in general, this is an entertaining, well-written book... a comprehensive history of the music of every single James Bond film, with countless quotes, stories and anecdotes that I had never heard before. The only drawback - a relatively minor one - is the narrator. He's not terrible, but he's very American and VERY enthusiastic... even when he's reading what-were-clearly dry and droll, low-key quotes from countless non-Americans like composer John Barry. I sure wish they had chosen a British narrator - it would have suited the material perfectly. But oh well... overall, the book is great and highly recommended.

In this wildly entertaining account of the golden age of the action movie, Nick de Semlyen charts Stallone and Schwarzenegger’s carnage-packed journey from enmity to friendship against the backdrop of Reagan’s America and the Cold War.

Excellent overview
Revisado: 06-18-23
Like some of the other reviews here, I found myself wishing that this book had dug deeper into the well chronicled lives and experiences of the 80s action heroes depicted. That being said, this is an extremely well written, well researched and fun lesson for anyone looking for an overview of a bygone era of movie heroes. I found myself coming away with more respect for Sylvester Stallone and even Jean-Claude Van Damme (sorta) than I ever thought I would have thought possible. And Steven Seagal seems as psychotic and egomaniacal as previously reported.

If there’s one trait that makes someone well-suited to comedy, it’s being able to take a punch - metaphorically and, occasionally, physically. Told with a healthy dose of self-deprecation, A Very Punchable Face reveals the brilliant mind behind some of the dumbest sketches on television, and lays bare the heart and humor of a hardworking guy - with a face you can’t help but want to punch.
