Historia
For too long, Africa’s history has been dominated by western narratives of slavery and colonialism, or simply ignored. Now, Zeinab Badawi sets the record straight. In this fascinating book, Badawi guides us through Africa’s spectacular history—from the very origins of our species, through ancient civilizations and medieval empires with remarkable queens and kings, to the miseries of conquest and the elation of independence.

One of a kind
Revisado: 04-21-25
That's right, African history does not start with Slavery or Colonization, nor is it only about Ancient Egypt. This book gets it right, by taking us from pre-history and covering every region of Africa for as much as can fit into a single book. Highly recommended.

Historia
Set in Nigeria in the late 1960s, The Road to the Country is the epic story of a shy, bookish student haunted by long-held guilt who must go to war to free himself. When his younger brother disappears as the country explodes in civil war, Kunle must set out on an impossible rescue mission. Kunle’s search for his brother becomes a journey of atonement that will see him conscripted into the breakaway Biafran army and forced to fight a war he hardly understands, all while navigating the prophecies of a local Seer, he who marks Kunle as an abami eda—one who will die and return to life.

Romance in war
Revisado: 03-15-25
Always great to read about the Biafran War. It's such a profound moment in history that it deserves much more coverage. The author really brings the horrors of war to your doorstep and makes you understand and feel what the characters are going through. I did not like all the psychological babble about the Seer, though. I thought that was highly unnecessary and slowed down the novel. But it doesn't take that much away. What I like most about the book is how it incorporates real-life historical people like Biafran commanders as characters in the book. Well done overall, and looking forward to another book on Biafra.

Even if one does not agree with every argument the author makes, and I found most compelling, it is still a great book for understanding modern geopolitics.

Historia
In just a few short decades, the many countries of our planet have become interconnected beyond our wildest imaginations. While thinking globally is often well-meaning, acting globally without consideration for local countries can unintentionally cause harmful results. In A Just Transition, renowned Cameroonian author and entrepreneur NJ Ayuk reveals how this sobering reality is unfolding as the International Energy Agency’s ambitious green energy (IEA) policies have stifled and crippled the energy economies of Africa.

Another Insightful Masterpiece from Ayuk

I am a nobody, but for what it's worth I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for this author and his work. After listening to his first book, "Billions at Play," which I thoroughly enjoyed, I had to give this one a go as well, and I was not disappointed. He basically explains how oil and other forms of energy are vital to Africa's growth, not just oil. Renewable and non-renewable sources of energy can be used together for a more prosperous Africa. He explains how he believes energy development is the key to Africa's success, and most importantly, he argues that Africans themselves must take responsibility for their own shortcomings and start working for the betterment of everyone on the continent and be at the forefront of the energy sector in Africa. This book is a must-read for anyone with any interest in engaging in the energy sector in Africa, be he/she Africans or foreigners. I very highly recommend this book, and I sincerely thank the author for writing it. Very educational.

Two decades of negotiating African oil and gas deals have given NJ Ayuk a grasp of the continent's energy landscape that few can match. The American-educated African energy lawyer serves up generous doses of that insight in his second book, Billions at Play: The Future of Africa Energy and Doing Deals.

Excellent piece of work
Revisado: 12-12-24
This book is an honest portrayal of Africa's potential. It neither sugarcoats the continent's challenges nor drags it through the negative narratives that is so prevalent with many books written about Africa. It barely states what the challenges are, how they may be overcome, and how some are being overcome in certain areas, all through the exploitation of petroleum resources. My only issue with this book is it's praise of Equayorial Guinea's government, which without a shred of doubt is perhaps one of the most worthless government on the continent. But other than that this book is a great read not only for those interested in the petroleum industry in Africa, but also for those interested in the economy and development of Africa. Mr. Ayuk's vast experience and expertise in the topic is clearly evident, and it is demonstrated with numerous examples and statistics he cites to back his claims and suggestions for a way forward. I'm really looking forward to reading his next book which was released shortly after this one. Very highly recommended.

Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell’s classic “Politics and the English Language,” but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities. In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind.

Excellent work
Revisado: 10-30-24
First book I ever read by this author. He presents a balanced, well-researched and straightforward view of some of the continuing conflicts that affect our world and nation of America. The numerous examples and historical facts he presents to back up what he claims and observed during his travels only adds more credence to his work. One can't even begin to fathom the amount of courage it took him to write this book. His trip to Senegal and his fears of what he might encounter there was a poignant testament to a man's willingness to face his fears and challenge the once popular but untrue narratives that he tackles throughout the book. Very highly recommended.

Revisado: 10-06-24
Changing the small things can make a big difference. This book beat illustrates how. Additionally, it provides numerous examples of how changing small and simple things now can prevent giant challenges in the future and make an organization or even an individual achieve much more efficient outcomes. Good read.

Before Talib Kweli became a world-renowned hip hop artist, he was a Brooklyn kid who liked to cut class, spit rhymes, and wander the streets of Greenwich Village with a motley crew of artists, rappers, and DJs who found hip hop more inspiring than their textbooks (much to the chagrin of the educator parents who had given their son an Afrocentric name in hope of securing for him a more traditional sense of pride and purpose).

Historia
The Napoleonic Wars saw fighting on an unprecedented scale in Europe and the Americas. It took the wealth of the British Empire, combined with the might of the continental armies, almost two decades to bring down one of the world's greatest military leaders and the empire that he had created. Napoleon's ultimate defeat was to determine the history of Europe for almost 100 years. From the frozen wastelands of Russia, through the brutal fighting in the Peninsula to the blood-soaked battlefield of Waterloo, this book tells the story of the dramatic rise and fall of the Napoleonic Empire.

Decent read
Revisado: 08-11-24
It's an interesting read, though I must confess that a lot of the book deals with the politics of the war. If that's what you're into, then this is perfect. I was looking for a complete course of the conflict, to include battles and major events. Regardless, I still learned a thing or two from this excellent book.
