A little too on the nose for current times
Revisado: 05-06-25
Does it get any better?
Disclaimer. I'm very likely not the "target audience" for this book. I was looking for a bargain and this one was on sale (nearly 60 hours for $6) and had a high rating. I've read quite a few post apocalyptic novels that I've quite enjoyed, but this one is giving me anxiety. Maybe because it is just a little too close to being possible. I don't want to give anything away but vibes so far are Clockwork Orange, Handmaid's Tale, and any story I've ever read about religious oppression. Does it get any better? Are humans able to overcome their worst inclinations or do they descend even further into power-hungry, violent oppression? Do I have the stomach to keep listening to this book? Don't know.

Terrible writing
Revisado: 07-12-24
Sorry Mr Robinson…I’ve read other books you’ve written that were much better. Not sure what happened here. Even Mr Bray could not save what sounded to me like first year fiction writing. I just can’t. Back it goes.

Are FBI agents really so stupid?
Revisado: 03-17-24
I’ll admit this is not my usual genre but RC Bray is a favorite narrator so I gave it a go. Ugh. I can’t finish it. Even Bray’s narration can’t save it and is a bit lackluster compared to the sci-fi that he narrates. I am bummed that I wasted a credit. Maybe you’ll like it if you’re all “yeah, kill the terrorists” but don’t expect any smart moves from anyone.

Not great literature but great fun
Revisado: 06-10-23
I LOVE Craig Alanson’s stories as read by RC Bray. To the critics out there, love it for what it is…a fun romp with a few “in jokes” (if you’ve read any of the ExForce books) a few cultural references and Bray’s amazing repertoire of character voices. No it’s not great literature but it is a welcome reprieve from the current news and good interlude listening between more serious reading. Nothing made me happier than to hear there are more ExForce books coming and I do hope we get more of Duke, Mr Boots, Azib the cowardly djin, and Kaz!

Historia
Some people greet the day with open arms. Sheriff Sunshine Vicram would rather give it a hearty shove and get back into bed, because there’s just too much going on right now. There’s a series of women going missing, and Sunny feels powerless to stop it. There’s her persistent and awesomely-rebellious daughter Auri, who’s out to singlehandedly become Del Sol’s youngest and fiercest investigator. And then there’s drama with Levi Ravinder—the guy she’s loved and lusted after for years. The guy who might just be her one and only.

This was a fun series reminiscent of another long running series narrated by Lorelei King. The story was good and as always, King’s narration was excellent.

Historia
Even today, the influence of Ancient Rome is indelible, with Europe and the world owing this extraordinary empire a huge cultural debt in almost every important category of human endeavor, including art, architecture, engineering, language, literature, law, and religion. At the peak of its power, Rome's span was vast. In the regional, restless, and shifting history of continental Europe, the Roman Empire stands as a towering monument to scale and stability, unified in politics and law, stretching from the sands of Syria to the moors of Scotland. And it stood for almost 700 years. In this series of 48 spirited lectures, you'll see how a small village of shepherds and farmers rose to tower over the civilized world of its day and left a permanent mark on history. In telling Rome's riveting story, Professor Fagan draws on a wealth of primary and secondary sources, including recent historical and archaeological scholarship, to introduce the fascinating tale of Rome's rise and decline, including the famous events and personalities that have become so familiar: . Horatius at the bridge . Hannibal crossing the Alps during Rome's life-or-death war with Carthage . Caesar assassinated before a statue of his archrival Pompey . The doomed lovers Antony and Cleopatra . The mad and venal emperors Nero and Caligula . The conversion of Constantine The course also addresses one of history's greatest questions: Why did the Roman Empire fall? And you'll learn why most modern scholars believe that the empire did not "fall" at all, but, rather, changed into something very different-the less urbanized, more rural, early medieval world.

Why the obnoxious beginning and end to each lecture?
Revisado: 09-10-22
Very interesting lecture series. Well presented though in my opinion would be vastly improved by doing away with the trumpets and clapping. It adds nothing.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

And contributed to Vance’s right wing agenda. As for the book itself, I thought was interesting, but it all seems suspect now.

So…audible will no longer let me return books
Revisado: 08-21-21
Sometimes it’s hard to know whether a book is “listenable” by hearing a 5 minute clip. When a narrator continually mispronounces words it drive me a bit nuts as do weird cadences and bad accent attempts that are only evident after listening for some time. Are these recordings not edited? Anyway… maybe the story is good. I may never know. I’ve enjoyed this narrator reading other books and enjoy fantasy writing, which is why I tried this one. I’m not sure I’ll be able to continue listening and now I’m stuck with it.

This book was not at all what I expected. I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll just say it was worth the time to listen. Ray Porter did a fantastic narration and really brought the characters to life. I hope Andy Weir keeps writing and Ray Porter keeps narrating his books.
