Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Historia
In this short book, Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz invite you to join an urgently needed conversation: Is Islam a religion of peace or war? Is it amenable to reform? Why do so many Muslims seem drawn to extremism? What do words like Islamism, jihadism, and fundamentalism mean in today's world? Remarkable for the breadth and depth of its analysis, this dialogue between a famous atheist and a former radical is all the more startling for its decorum. Harris and Nawaz have produced something genuinely new: they engage one of the most polarizing issues of our time - fearlessly and fully - and actually make progress.

Excellent book - if you are thoughtful and want a better understanding of the risk of Islamism and jihadism, this is the book for you. Concise, clear - not pedantic.

In 1977, at the age of 17, Conway left his family's comfortable suburban home to move to the Appalachian Mountains. For more than two decades he has lived there, making fire with sticks, wearing skins from animals he has trapped, and trying to convince Americans to give up their materialistic lifestyles and return with him back to nature.

Pretty good story - sadness for the inevitable loss of a certain kind of (now, unneeded) manhood. Story of one of the last believers, part prophet, part huckster, part bully.

Historia
Kim Barker is not your typical, impassive foreign correspondent—she is candid, self-deprecating, laugh-out-loud funny. At first an awkward newbie in Afghanistan, she grows into a wisecracking, seasoned reporter with grave concerns about our ability to win hearts and minds in the region. In The Taliban Shuffle, Barker offers an insider’s account of the “forgotten war” in Afghanistan and Pakistan, chronicling the years after America’s initial routing of the Taliban, when we failed to finish the job.

Very good

Any additional comments?
Good explanation of how it feels to live in a war zone - the initial sense of unreality, weird social dynamics, juxtaposition of humor and bloody tragedy - and the difficulty coming back to the realities of home. Entertaining and enlightening. The reader is too snarky for my taste, though.

Historia
In 1683, an Ottoman army that stretched from horizon to horizon set out to seize the "Golden Apple", as Turks referred to Vienna. The ensuing siege pitted battle-hardened Janissaries wielding 17th-century grenades against Habsburg armies, widely feared for their savagery. The walls of Vienna bristled with guns as the besieging Ottoman host launched bombs, fired cannons, and showered the populace with arrows during the battle for Christianity's bulwark.

Would you listen to The Enemy at the Gate again? Why?
Fascinating...would not listen again but a great source of reference material
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Enemy at the Gate?
A great summary of the long enmity/relationship of East and West. Detailed history about military strategy and tactics - infantry, cavalry, artillery - very interesting for any military person. Do not dip into this history, however, without hearing the author's warning in the last chapter - this book raises questions, but should not be used as propaganda.

Interesting premise, the narrator is very good...but there's too much graphic violence for me, I can't finish it.

Historia
In David Ignatius' gripping new novel, spies don' t bother to steal information...they change it, permanently and invisibly. Graham Weber has been director of the CIA for less than a week when a Swiss kid in a dirty T-shirt walks into the American consulate in Hamburg and says the agency has been hacked, and he has a list of agents' names to prove it. This is the moment a CIA director most dreads. Weber isn' t sure where to turn until he meets a charismatic (and unstable) young man named James Morris who runs the Internet Operations Center.

What did you like best about The Director? What did you like least?
Interesting story that brings in computer hackery, intel issues, and revolutionary history. Predictable, and the sexiness and budding romance is blah and unnecessary.

Historia
Between the ages of twelve and twenty-four, the brain changes in important and, at times, challenging ways. In Brainstorm, the renowned psychiatrist and bestselling author of Parenting from the Inside Out, The Whole-Brain Child, and Mindsight, Daniel Siegel busts a number of commonly held myths about adolescence — for example, that it is merely a stage of “immaturity” filled with often “crazy” behavior — to reveal how it is in fact a vital time in our lives in terms of charting the course for the adults we ultimately become.

Not helpful
Revisado: 10-04-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
The first section was good - about 4 important qualities of adolescence, and how those qualities can add joy to adulthood. The rest: Not enough about teens, too much about "mindsight" - which seems to be basic observation and developing intuition.

Historia
In 2002, the town of Galesburg, a slowly declining Rustbelt city of 33,000 in western Illinois, learned that it would soon lose its largest factory, a Maytag refrigerator plant that had anchored Galesburg's social and economic life for decades. Workers at the plant earned $15.14 an hour, had good insurance, and were assured a solid retirement. In 2004, the plant was relocated to Reynosa, Mexico, where workers sometimes spent 13-hour days assembling refrigerators for $1.10 an hour.
