Historia
In this heartfelt memoir by the Masterpiece Theatre host, Pulitzer Prize winner, and groundbreaking New York Times columnist, Russell Baker traces his youth in the mountains of rural Virginia. When Baker was only five, his father died. His mother, strong-willed and matriarchal, never looked back. After all, she had three children to raise. These were Depression years, and Mrs. Baker moved her fledgling family to Baltimore. Baker's mother was determined her children would succeed, and we know her regimen worked for Russell.

All over the place…
Revisado: 09-27-23
The introduction of the book promises to turn the original blathering of anecdotes into a cohesive story. I’m afraid the author did not finalize his ambition before publication.

Historia
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

A must read…
Revisado: 07-11-23
Not because of the awesome memoir woven into a nonfiction book that will change just your life forever, but because, without knowing it, your family and your friends need you to learn this, become a healthier version of yourself, and pass on the wisdom.

Historia
Discovered at twelve years old, Madison Beer was one of the first artists to have her entire life documented online. Over the past decade, she has navigated the spotlight as a child, through her teenage years, and now as a young woman in her twenties. In The Half of It, Madison pulls back the curtain to show the behind-the-scenes of her journey, from reckoning with mass hate online and the time her private pictures were leaked, to battling suicidal thoughts while making her highly acclaimed debut album, Life Support, and her recovery since then.

Courage personified at 24?
Revisado: 04-25-23
Madison, in my estimation, your resilience results from a deep capacity for courage; it's genuinely remarkable.
As a memoir ghostwriter, a through-line I find in most memoirs I love to read or help write is true courage. Madison, your brief yet soul-stirring piece captivates and seeks to empower—and how could it not? It's who you are! Bravo; not so selfish after all, huh? :)
It's astonishing how traumas we're used to seeing only speakable in the pages of much older person's life are here in the chapters of a 24-year-old. That will only be more and more prevalent as mental health becomes less stigmatized, and society must learn to allow growth and transformation in those around us, despite our insecurities.
I hate you had to deal with any of it, but your grace stands proud, Madison. And since you don't seem willing to trade any of it, as one of your many readers, I'm inclined to appreciate it all for what it is, too: years you were able to establish and build a sense of courage that now impacts and lifts others. Again, bravo!

PS It bears mention that although I work in the field, I had no hand in helping with any part of this book. I'm an avid memoir reader as part of my profession and as a personal interest. I remember seeing Madison in vlogs on YouTube a few years ago and only saw her again yesterday on Rhett & Link's GMM (brave of you to go through all that! haha). After the show, I quickly pre-purchased this memoir (that she was on the show to promote) and was happy to both listen to it this first morning it's out and to leave the first Audible review!

Beauty within brevity…
Revisado: 02-22-17
This book is for survivors what Strunk and White's masterpiece is for writers. Read it, perhaps read it more than just three times. Digest. Read it again. Take some notes, then make some plans. Live.
