Childish narrator

This is an interesting story but the narrator makes it seem trivial. This one would be better read in print form.

Different from the author's other books
Revisado: 02-28-19
The central part of the story is an online porn site. It was just too much for me and I gave up after about one-quarter of the book. The main character was not particularly likable, either. I love all the other Greg Iles books, but not this one. Perhaps the story improved later, but I haven't the patience to find out.

Card players heaven
Revisado: 02-28-19
This was a solid mystery with interesting characters. For me, the long, detailed descriptions of the card maneuvers became tedious, but I expect someone who enjoys playing cards would enjoy them. Otherwise, a good read. Good writing, good flow.

Too repetitive; narrator can't pronounce Spanish.
Revisado: 12-15-18
I enjoyed this book for about the first half. Then it got old that the characters would get out of one dangerous situation and jump right into another with relatively little character development. When it happened again, I gave up.
The action is set in Mexico but the narrator has trouble pronouncing Spanish. For example, he says Pole-EE-Cee-a instead of pole-ee-CEE-a. This is irksome.

Good story, poor narration
Revisado: 08-12-18
Swain does interesting plots with writing that flows well. He does an especially good job with stories about finding missing children. This narrator is very amateurish, though. The story was good enough to keep going.

Historia
Why do "Great Books" continue to speak to us hundreds and even thousands of years after they were written? Can they deepen our self-knowledge and wisdom? Are our lives changed in any meaningful way by the experience of reading them?Tackle these questions and more in these 36 engaging lectures. Beginning with his definition of a Great Book as one that possesses a great theme of enduring importance, noble language that "elevates the soul and ennobles the mind," and a universality that enables it to "speak across the ages," Professor Fears examines a body of work that offers extraordinary wisdom to those willing to receive it.

Christian bias
Revisado: 08-01-18
Fears gives entertaining summaries of great books, but his analysis has a strong bias toward Christianity. For some books covered in the course that is appropriate. For others it is intrusive.

A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Narration spoils the whole book
Revisado: 12-23-17
I made it through 4 chapters before I just could take no more of the very pedestrian reading. All the characters had the same voice and there were inappropriate pauses. The voice was a monotone. The story was just an ordinary procedural which might have been saved by a good reader. Don't waste your time.

Revisado: 12-01-17
Orlagh Cassidy is great as always, but Kyf Brewer is somewhat amateurish and overdramatic. Ron McClarty does Baldacci's books much better. Still, the story is a good one, and worth a listen.

Spoiled by the narration
Revisado: 09-24-17
The narration is clipped and monotone. I really tried but I just could not become interested in the story with that reader. He also narrated "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and I fell asleep every time I tried to listen to it. I did not realize they were the same when I bought this title. I will try to read the story rather than listen to it.

Historia
When Maine game warden Mike Bowditch is tasked with shooting invasive feral hogs that are tearing up the forest in his district, he makes a horrific discovery—a dead baby buried in a shallow grave. Even more disturbing: evidence suggests the infant was the child of a young woman who was presumed to have died four years earlier after she disappeared from a group rafting trip. As Bowditch assists the reopened investigation, he begins to suspect that some of his neighbors aren’t who they seem to be.

Addictive Series
Revisado: 07-14-17
This is the best of the Mike Bowditch stories so far. I love the world Paul Doiron has created. I am not from Maine and reading these stories makes me want to visit and see where the novels are set.
Mike is loveable, like a puppy. Most of the female characters are strong and tough -- like cacti. They are prickly and contentious. Interesting, but I would not like to get close to them.
The narrator is almost perfect. I can't imagine Mike having any other voice. If only he would look ahead a bit and not put pauses in the wrong places. I think he often pauses at the end of a written line, so it results in readings like,"He got out [pause] of the car. It's a bit disconcerting.
I do highly recommend this series. Start at the beginning.
