Historia
Almost everything about Wallace is at odds with the Midwestern university town where he is working uneasily toward a biochem degree. An introverted young man from Alabama, black and queer, he has left behind his family without escaping the long shadows of his childhood. For reasons of self-preservation, Wallace has enforced a wary distance even within his own circle of friends—some dating each other, some dating women, some feigning straightness.

Masterful storytelling and narration
Revisado: 09-30-20
This is a strong story - the places, characters, events. I was drawn in immediately by the author's skills. I wanted to know more about these people and their lives.
This is a brilliantly written book. Brandon Taylor's pacing and variation throughout are beautifully done. the story moves well, great pace and details - and he is a master of drawing readers into key moments with a slowing down and focusing in on specific parts of a scene. I enjoyed all of this book - and admire his skill in maneuvering through important current events and issues in this book. I particularly love his scenes involving water and food; some of those places I reread/relistened to, as a writer and not just a reader - I know I've already said this - but he is a master of this moving in and out, speeding us up and slowing us down, writing through the body, heart, entire being.
I enjoyed the narration for the audio version. there was enough variation of character voices to know who was who, but it was not too much to be distracting. His voice is clear, matched the story well, good to listen to. very well done.
I highly recommend this book.

Compelling plot; needed another round of editing
Revisado: 06-15-20
There are some great plot lines. I was invested to know what was going to happen, who did what, and so on. Some of the intrigue was not fully realized and some of the storyline felt too obvious or not fully realized. There were also several places where either the writing was off a bit, or perhaps the editing was incomplete - and it affected the plausibility of the story and the ability to trust the storyline and the protagonist. I enjoy an unreliable narrator, but when writing or editing makes the narrator unbelievable, that is a different situation. Again, I enjoyed much of the book, but there were some inconsistencies and places where the writing and/or editing pulled me out. It ends with an obvious (too obvious?) hook to get the reader to buy the next book. I may or may not.

Historia
From acclaimed author Ursula K. Le Guin, and with an introduction by Karen Joy Fowler, a collection of thoughts - always adroit, often acerbic - on aging, belief, the state of literature, and the state of the nation. Ursula K. Le Guin has taken listeners to imaginary worlds for decades. Now she's in the last great frontier of life, old age, and exploring new literary territory: the blog, a forum where her voice - sharp, witty, as compassionate as it is critical - shines. No Time to Spare collects the best of Ursula's blog, presenting perfectly crystallized dispatches on what matters.

Historia
Lidia Yuknavitch is a proud misfit. That wasn't always the case. It took Lidia a long time to not simply accept but appreciate her misfit status. Having flunked out of college twice (and maybe even a third time that she's not going to tell you about), with two epic divorces under her belt, an episode of rehab for drug use, and two stints in jail, she felt like she would never fit in. She was a hopeless misfit. She'd failed as daughter, wife, mother, scholar - and yet the dream of being a writer was stuck like "a small sad stone" in her throat.

Historia
Claudia Rankine's bold new audiobook recounts mounting racial aggressions in ongoing encounters in 21st-century daily life and in the media. Some of these encounters are slights, seeming slips of the tongue, and some are intentional offensives in the classroom, at the supermarket, at home, on the tennis court with Serena Williams and the soccer field with Zinedine Zidane, online, on TV - everywhere, all the time. The accumulative stresses come to bear on a person's ability to speak, perform, and stay alive.

Strong writing & story; narrator not up to task
Revisado: 04-20-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I recommend the story. Denise Mina's writing is strong and this is no exception - the story moves well, the characters are clear and strong, the storyline is well-written and a good read.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
She didn't hit the range and depth of the characters. She made some of them sound whiny and I didn't feel the same connection to the story and characters that I did with the earlier narrator - who I felt was a great match for Mina's writing. This narrator didn't seem to be able to get into the world of the writing and it created a disconnect with it at times as I listened. Some of the characterizations were way off base and at times I felt like I was listening to an elementary school teacher in a room with young children - it just did not fit the story and characters.
Any additional comments?
The writing is solid. Solid enough that I can listen through the narrator's lack of "getting" a good handle on it. I'd say it's still worth a listen - or at least buy the book and read it. The story is good.

But after just a few days on the job, Clay begins to realize that this store is even more curious than the name suggests. There are only a few customers, but they come in repeatedly and never seem to actually buy anything....

Entertaining and Enticing
Revisado: 02-25-13
Any additional comments?
This is one of the best audiobooks I've listened to. The story itself flows and is modern and unpretentious, engaging and layered. The author manages to weave in new technology and characters, with a fun sense of mystery and a good pace, along with ancient mystery. It has been a while since I've had this much fun reading/listening to a book. And I can't put it down - only when I have to, for sleep, or at work where it would be impossible to do my job with headphones on; I drive with it, exercise with it, answer emails with it, even type in edits on my own book listening to it.
The narrator is really good, as well. I enjoy the voice, and the characters are distinguishable and clear and consistent. A joy to listen to - and I'm currently looking at other books read by this person.
I've purchased a print copy of this book for one friend, a digital copy for another friend, and will buy a gift of audiobook for another friend.

Historia
In Jasper Fforde's Great Britain, circa 1985, time travel is routine, cloning is a reality (dodos are the resurrected pet of choice), and literature is taken very, very seriously. England is a virtual police state where an aunt can get lost (literally) in a Wordsworth poem and forging Byronic verse is a punishable offense. All this is business as usual for Thursday Next, renowned Special Operative in literary detection.

Witty story and smooth narration
Revisado: 12-25-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The story is clever and Fforde does a nice job of making the fictional parts of the story blend with the familiar. The protagonist has the qualities we want a good one to have: things we like and admire and she has her flaws. She is tough and human and "real."
What did you like best about this story?
The story moves at a good pace. And I love some of the names (such Bthe character raxton Hicks, Next's aunt and uncle's names, the division where she works). It's a good detective story, with bits of chase scenes, humor and suspense.
Any additional comments?
The narrator does a nice job with character differentiation and her voice works really well for this story. Her pacing is good and I enjoy listening to her read.
