Historia
This story by James Oliver Curwood, published in 1913, possesses all of the great elements that make up a good adventure yarn! Old fashioned sense of nobility, falling in love, losing love, suspense, tragedies and ultimate happiness regained as the listener gets entangled in the story - full of twists and turns - of a Sergeant of the Canadian Northwest Mounted and his partner; chasing an elusive killer and his wife through a wintry and harsh world.

Entertaining but dated
Revisado: 02-24-21
An adventure story set in the far north of Canada in the days of the Hudson Bay fur trappers. A popular adventure story when written but has issues common to popular novels of 100+ years ago. Gender and racial stereotypes are evident. The “hero” violates his oath to uphold the law, developed an unhealthy/unrealistic instant romantic attachment to the wife of the criminal he is hunting, and leaves an infant in a tent alone in the winter as he goes off to chase down an Indian woman and her husband to attempt to force them to return to care for the child’s mother who is stricken with small pox. This story has issues that don’t age well.

Historia
An adventure classic by James Oliver Curwood with a thrilling set-up: three men, a map and a hidden treasure... A young white man, his half-breed friend, and an Indian sage who communes with the wilderness, all know the gold is hidden somewhere in the north Canadian wilderness. But is the map really reliable? This work is packed with almost nonstop adventure and action! James Oliver Curwood (1878-1927) was an American action-adventure writer.

The continued story from James Oliver Curwood’s Wolf Hunters
Revisado: 02-24-21
This is the continuing saga of the characters from the Wolf Hunters. It brings back good memories of my dad reading this to me and my sisters around a campfire decades ago. Good story from a top author of 100+ years ago.

Historia
The starved wolf-pack was hot on his trail. It was the biggest pack that Wabi had ever seen. He calculated there were at least 50 animals in it, possibly even more. Nearer and nearer they came, until the first were scarcely 200 feet away. Close enough for Wabi to see this was a hungry, determined pack. Then, with a shout, the Indian leaped and dashed fearlessly toward them. This unexpected move stopped the foremost wolves and Wabi fired two of his three remaining bullets. The trees were 80 yards away....

Wonderful tale of Northern Adventure
Revisado: 02-18-21
I first heard this story read by my father around a campfire. This performance brought back great memories. It’s a great story of adventure set in the northern woods in the days of the Hudson Bay company fur trappers. It’s kind of like jack London meets the Hardy boys. 😃

Historia
Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. Based on 12 years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. Brown explains how vulnerability is both the core of difficult emotions like fear, grief, and disappointment, and the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation, and creativity.

A perfect guide to having a life well lived!
Umbrella principles that can applied to all aspects of our lives: home, work and play.
Most fitting for these divisive times.
Whether your beliefs be more conservative or liberal, whether your politics is more red or blue, whether you live in a rural area or an urban center, if we all apply what is taught in this book, we will see the world changed for the better!
Thank you Dr. Brown!

Historia
In 1985, Anthony Ray Hinton was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder in Alabama. Stunned, confused, and only 29 years old, Hinton knew that it was a case of mistaken identity and believed that the truth would prove his innocence and ultimately set him free. But with an incompetent defense attorney and a different system of justice for a poor black man in the South, Hinton was sentenced to death by electrocution. He spent his first three years on Death Row at Holman State Prison in despairing silence.

A man like Nelson Mandela
Revisado: 09-29-19
As I progressed through this book, I was struck with the similarity between Anthony Ray Hinton and Nelson Mandela. Both were wrongly imprisoned for decades and Mr. Hinton with the ever present threat of execution. I am in awe that after this, men such as Nelson Mandela and Anthony Ray Hinton could emerge as a compassionate forgiving human being. They do not forget the wrongs done to themselves but use those experiences to continue working to make the world a better place. God bless Mr. Hinton and the memory of Mr Mandela.

Historia
Barack Obama's keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention instantly catapulted the little-known state senator from Illinois into the national spotlight. Three months later Obama would win election to the US Senate; four years later he would make history as America's first black president. Now, at the end of his second presidential term, David J. Garrow delivers the most compelling and comprehensive biography ever written of Obama in the years preceding his presidency.

Balanced review and worth the time
Revisado: 09-12-19
This is definitely a long read/listen but one of the most detailed and balanced reviews of Barack Obama’s rise to the presidency. Details of the actual presidency are limited in comparison to rise to presidency. This however is to be expected as the title states. The very extensive bibliography gives detailed references for future reading and for those who would choose to verify information. I’d recommend purchasing the paper copy as you listen to the audible narration. The narration, while excellent, does not have the nearly 400 pages of bibliography and detailed index that add greatly to this scholarly work. Kudos to David J. Garrow for a well written thoroughly enjoyable book.

Nelson Mandela is one of the great moral and political leaders of our time: an international hero whose lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in South Africa won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country. Since his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment, Mandela has been at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world.

It was wonderful to have Michael Boatman’s narration to help me with many words and names which were unfamiliar to me. There are so many similarities between the life of Nelson Mandela and George Washington. Mr. Mandela’s life is an inspiration as to who we can be.

Historia
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

Inspiration from yesteryear bringing hope for today.
Revisado: 03-05-19
As we sometimes get caught up in today’s political outrages this narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass shows that while there is still tremendous work to do in ensuring equality of all people, progress has been made and has lasted. As we all are, Frederick Douglass was an imperfect person yet he was able to be a force for great improvements by constantly standing up and calling out wrongs those in power perpetuate upon those who are subject to their power and at the same time he called for individual accountability and responsibility. This book is well worth the time spent reading/listening to and thinking about American freedom and responsibility.
