Great Storytelling -- But Too Short

The details of this work and the character building are fantastic and brilliant. Pat is an artist I might describe as the DaVinci of fantasy. And like DaVinci he produces about 100x more sketchbook than actual commissioned work. Readers will likely see none of these sketches as they're mostly just for Pat. This is a sketchbook Rothfuss and Audible turned into a very short audiobook. It's not a book. It's also a derivative of an earlier work he already published.

I think Rothfuss and DaVinci both have/had ADD. Both were brilliant. Both knew they were brilliant but they both could have learned something from Picasso; "Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working."

The pre-order of this work billed this at ~8-hours. Its about 4. Most of this was written YEARS ago before Pat was a successful Author. He was still hungry to prove himself back then and had nothing to lose. That's when he took bold risks but they also paid off.

This work is brilliant but too short. Pat under-delivered and he knows it. He sold a bunch of his readers short b/c he needs a minder, or a personal assistant, or maybe counseling. If this is the first step in overcoming some kind of anxiety -- keep going. Your fans love it.

Maybe he needs to get over himself. It's not about him. Its about the work. Fans love his creations. They love his works. I love his work and I want to see more of it! His voice is a great voice! I'd really appreciate if he could just show up and represent his characters and his vision. Maybe he needs to care less what his fans think and just create without thinking about his fans.

Too often people care about what others think too little. If I had to guess I think Pat probably cares too much--why else would he write a long diatribe on Goodreads the day after his experiment in procrastination was published? It seems like he's reading this stuff and letting it live in his head.

If he's reading this paltry review maybe he'll consider something: "stop reading reviews, get over them, and get back to writing". The risk if he doesn't is that all the world will have from Pat (like DaVinci) are sketchbooks when we could have had airplanes!

To Pat: We love your voice, but we need to hear more of it. If your inner critic is in the way, please get over yourself and stop apologizing for your mistakes. Please make some happy accidents and show us how awesome they were! Art makes mistakes and nobody cares. The only people who care are the people who don't make art. Picasso isn't remembered for his mistakes, he's remembered for his bold and brilliant product.

As fans we love your art, and your artistry, but finished is better than perfect. Good enough is better than never got published.

Many of the parts of this story were fairly good, but the story keeps venturing into obscure territory. Plot devices seem to lose touch with reality. The creatures, characters, and sequences get increasingly bizarre, The novel feels stretched-out and dropped off when it should be concluding. This subtracts from the fun of the story.

Very different from the other books but still enjoyable in some ways.

But what about the rest of it. Since this title is exclusive to audible I have to wonder about what happened to the rest of it? As in the end of the book where it lists all the people who worked on it, I have to wonder something. What happen to the second reader, the sound effects and all the cool artwork? As they said in the book at the end where they thanked 2 separate people for reading the book, even though Suzy Jackson was literally the only one reading anything and doing every bit of the reading.

As I have heard her read the previous books plus other ones as well. As most of the voices for the characters in this book are the same as other ones. As with her reading of how to kill a demon king in ten easy steps she used the exact same voices for two main characters. As I have heard enough of there voice and different impressions and voice changes to recognize, so who else read this book as no one else talked.

Also there were no sound effects anywhere in the book, as at least five people composed and worked on sound effects for this book, yet there are no sound effects. There is just “there was a alarm”, “there was a fluting noise”, etc yet five people were credited for making sound effects for all these things, despite there being no sound effects. And tons of art and stuff which was apparently made for this book and was also very heavily implied was included with it.

Except there is no art or any other version of this book which that was included in. So what happened to all these hardworking people who contributed so much, but who’s actual work wasn’t actually seen or part of the book. As there is one reader, no sound effects and no large amount of artwork included in this books only publication. Yet none of that is here as people were credited with all this stuff despite none of it making it into the book. As now there is no real proof that these people even did anything. So if someone connected to this book project if your reading this can ask Sanderson what happen to all the stuff that was supposed to be included in this book yet isn’t.

Also one last thing, in book 2 of the primary series it says that cytonics can make mind blades yet there is a disturbing lack of awesome mind blades, starship battles (like the previous which in any case should have had more) fight scenes, stuff blowing up, starship combat (which seems to keep getting more phased out and less exciting each book) and less actual threats and people being attacked by massive fleets of starships and that sort of thing, as the closest there was, was that almost happening and a base almost getting hit by a giant rock. As it’s like Sanderson is making a action book devoid of good action scenes like his other books. As you can have good action scenes and character devolpment together, but stop constantly sacrificing action scenes for dialogue and slow character devolpment. As it ruins the entire story flow as it’s like the action is not longer exciting and the characters feel like really, really 2D and change so slowly and all have basically the same character traits as each other, as the thrill and anticipation from the first two books is now gone. And the characters feel fake because your trying way way way to hard to make them seem deep and thoughtful, as the narrator is good but it clashes with the flow and rhythm of the story. As the narrators voice and there mannerisms portray one thing but the words and characterization say something else normally slightly in conflict or not quite fitting with the situation. As it needs more style, different types of wit, more creativity, more intelligence and some level of plotting and just basically good story telling like in other Sanderson works. Like some how there are just so many little issues and conflicting things going on and substandard Sanderson writing that it messes up and ruins the book and the story and the message it’s trying to convey. As Sanderson needs to go back and re learn all of the basics. And things and find a way to just have the book fit the genre and have some real soul and emotion, bit more subtleness and for him to just not try so hard just tell a good story, with awesome action scenes and work with the narrators flow and feel better and book 1, 2, 3 are all super different from each other and that also makes the narrator not fit and mesh well with them. As first we got an apple, then a banana and then a beet or something. And then he expects the narrator to make near identical cakes only using that ingredient as a flavor (plus sugar) it just doesn’t work. He should just play to the narrators strengths as it was a pretty good fit for book one but not perfect, and then a ok but not great fit for the second, and then a kind of eh, shaking nests of book three. It like he’s trying to make who mows what when he should just make a good story ( also maybe make it longer so there’s enough space for epic battles and all the characterization you want to put in as it’s totally unbalanced at its current ratio’s) As it’s like characterization, dialogue, character devolpmemt, not all that exiting fight scene or conflict, repeat for or five times, then finally (this books finally was the least exciting one by the way) more Lore and stuff shoved in the middle and other places and at the end and then the end, cue cliffhanger, then another less exciting book that still feels off in some major yet hard to explain basic fundamental way ( they just don’t feel right, ok, something basic and
super important is some how missing) and then the end, spenza turns all the delvers and turns braid (plot of next book, it’s super predictable now and will be disappointed if that doesn’t happen as that’s the only right thing story wise to do) the end every one lives happily ever after.

Honestly I don’t know 100 percent why but this ain’t anywhere close to Sandersons normal level. (Enough is enough, we don’t want Sanderson inc pumping out infinite solesless copies ( don’t get me started on lux, it was a nightmare that ruined the reckonners for me) please just find a way to be good at writing again.

This was a great book. Not quite as interesting as his other works, but a solid middle-series book.

Reading is spectacular as always.

Mucn better than most other star wars

This trilogy is probably one of the best star wars book series in my oponion. As most are good or better than good. Some are not as great of course sadly wich is rather disappointing.

As it is infinitely better then the train wrecks that were the prequels and the new sequel trilogy. As there prequels just did not convert to movie format well. Where as the new trilogy was just a poor and discombobulated rehash of the orginal trilogy.

As it was just tweaking and mashing together old and new characters who already existed or we almost completely based off old ones. As Ray and Poe dameron are just luke split in half. With the cocky and confident pilot side turned up to eleven with his (loveable droid carrying vaulble data relating to the death star)

And rey just being a femal luke skywalker who grew up improvished on a desert world where they then met the droid with the important data about the death star.

As the new trilogy may have ruined star wars for me. As I could go on and on about how hoth and the salt world follow the same general plot line. How the death star and that starkiller is just a super lazy copy. And also how the saddest part by far is there is snoke the rip off emporer and the real emporer as well.

Wich means that the first two and the thirds plots make zero sense and do not work at all. As the emporer not being dead makes no sense as he literally exploded and died like other dimilar powerful sith.

As it just drops us into a dumb, strange and uncertain series of events leading up tp it. As there are atleast 15 mpvies/ books minium to explain the crazy nonsenseicallyness that you are dropped into. As theres not enough context to make there wierd expanded star wars expanded universe. As there isnt any resemblance to the actul expaned star wars universe.

As it has its own timeline wich dosent fit with anything else. This even thought it would be tougj to convert this to movie format would likely be infinitely better.

It’s hard to write a book for a story this complex. MJS pulled it off. I was worried seeing some negative reviews, but the book was great. It carries the arc, plot, and story well. Worth the listen! Did not disappoint.

Looking forward to more.
