Inspirational and interesting
Revisado: 02-19-25
Honestly, as a runner, I had never been a big fan of Nike running shoes. More on that later. This book, however, is what you need it to be which is an inspiration and a fascinating tale of the ups and downs of the success story of how Nike was created and the many different kinds of challenges and hurdles which we’re overcome on the road to the finish line; nope, I could not help myself with the puns. The truth about all of these types of victory lap books ( ok, totally compulsive at this point, annoying, that’s it) is that they serve as a reminder that so much in life is the same way. We are reminded to persevere and to trust your gut and to have faith in our ideas as well as that nothing worthwhile is ever easy. It is uplifting to keep this in mind. I feel encouraged and challenged and confident; that feels great. I thought it was interesting how New Balance was barely mentioned. As a runner, that’s fishy. It makes me want to seek out any possible stories regarding that particular relationship. Not that I expect to change my opinion that this is an excellent read. I do think much of some hard truths must be varnished over, I would expect no less. Such a book would probably be of a different ilk. I was not looking for that kind of read.
I read this book as a runner, which is a slightly different perspective. Not necessary even, but it comes with some shared understanding of the love of the sport and gratitude to the folks who made it big and put it on my radar. I used to log a lot of miles running and in my peak years would think little of a 6 mile run and frequently ran about 50 miles a week. The first time I bought Nike’s was around 1989 and they were Air Max’s. I, like many runners who logged over 6 miles pretty frequently, ran in New Balance. There were other good brands too, but to my mind the day Nike made it on my radar was when everyone raved about how cool the air bubble looked and how great the sneakers were. Mine looked so cool and I wanted to live them but it really was right around the 6 mile mark that my feet just got so much more tired in the Air Max. I never bought another pair and became an NB Superfan. My feet never really tired in New Balance so it was a new thing to me and the injuries people got at one point from some Nike’s ( which the book mentions) were known to be a problem and scared me off. Not sure when those shoes were created exactly, but it’s in the book. Anyway, all of that aside I feel better about Nike than ever and have no doubt they fixed the issue - which I never quite believed before. With innovation comes setbacks. Great book.

Historia
When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Fascinating
Revisado: 02-09-25
I’m glad I read this because, admire or disdain him, Elon Musk is interesting and brilliant. I would say it is not so easy to pinpoint who he is exactly. Given so many do love to throw labels on him. Fascinating, yes. Also clever, risk-taker, serious yet silly, not-neurotypical in more ways than one, and on and on

Incredible writing and story
Revisado: 01-28-25
This interesting story is one of the very best examples of creative writing I have read which has been recently written. It all takes place in one world superimposed on another with various other worlds, or ways of existence, layered within each other. The delicate way in which all of the pieces of these worlds fit together is pure artistry. The writing is so fine that the emotions feel personal even to someone who cannot personally relate to the circumstances. I do not feel so much that I understand the way the characters must have felt living in such shadows as I feel like the book articulates universal feelings which is part of its magic. Who is right? Who is wrong? Who is good and why? What should matter most?

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Worth reading more than once
Revisado: 01-25-25
There is so much to learn about how the brain and body work together. I am fascinated by what we already know and optimistic that such studies will help improve the human condition. Personally, meditation and yoga have helped me a lot and I loved learning a bit about why and how. Now all I have to do is keep at it!

The writing, the scene setting, the humor, the heartbreak of it all - for a West Wing fan, this book brings you up closer than ever. So many juicy little inside stories and personal moments are shared that it will blow you away. I love the way Melissa and Mary interact on this audio version. Two top notch actresses reading their book to you is a treat in and of itself. I listen to a lot of books and the performance in this one is Grammy worthy for sure!

Sensual themes drive this intriguing story
Revisado: 11-03-24
This book is exceptionally well written and the author details with delicate attention the myriad themes which intertwine throughout the story (and character development) and leave the reader piecing all the ways they fit together even after the book is finished.
The reader settles into a place in time which is quickly familiar and is brought along into this invented world through the sensual description of everything Paris-past from books, street life, cover-art and bookbinding to visual and culinary candy-art and wrappers all through the minds of fascinating characters. There is plenty of old-bookstore-core. moment-placing scent combinations, precise texture descriptions, atmospheric sounds, and the flavors of things from food to skin, and breath, and spiders’ webs. There is imagery which is about both what is seen and what is imagined as much as how it is framed. The author explores types of love and its potential facets, attitudes towards love and sexuality, and feelings for loved ones in comparison to those who love us, as well as deep longing, desire, and limerence. There is much to enjoy and ponder!

Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

Short Stories
Revisado: 07-27-24
If you like short stories, as I do, you should definitely pick this up. They are varied and clever. The second part is a sort of annex to “Rules of Civility” where we learn more about Evelyn Ross and her time after she heads to CA. I would not be surprised if there were more spinoffs of other characters in other books. Clearly not his plan, but the thought seems to jibe with Towles’ creativity. Some stories have stuck with me more than others, but I expect this is personal rather than an indication of which is best. Great vacation or Summer read.

For centuries, works of art have been stolen in countless ways from all over the world, but no one has been quite as successful at it as the master thief Stéphane Breitwieser. Carrying out more than two hundred heists over nearly eight years—in museums and cathedrals all over Europe—Breitwieser, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout, stole more than three hundred objects, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion.

Meh…
Revisado: 05-04-24
I did not realize this book was based on a true story until I finished it. I do think I would have liked it better if I had known. The actual story itself is interesting, but I did not care for how this book unfolded the story. I love stories about art heists and outrageous bold acts. It could have been so much more intriguing. Instead it felt somewhat slapdash.

Total Downer!
Revisado: 05-04-24
In my personal opinion, this book was too negative and desperately sad for me to listen past Chapter 6. The author reads it herself, she does a good job I suppose, but I could not tolerate her particular interpretation of annoying English accents. Maybe that means her performance score should be higher? Just not my taste. Too much drama and negativity.
