Historia
Some places seem too beautiful to be touched by horror. Summit Lake, nestled in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, is that kind of place. But two weeks ago, Becca Eckersley, a first-year law student and daughter of a powerful attorney, was brutally murdered there. Now the town is reeling with grief, and the police are baffled.

Chilling, thrilling, poignant and tragic, all in one hell of an exciting page turner! Loved it!
Revisado: 07-05-24
I’ve officially read (listened to) all of Charlie Donlea’s novels now and enjoyed every one of them quite immensely! I’m not sure how Summit Lake ended up being the last one I read (because I think it was the first one he wrote). Whatever the writing order was, I think this story is probably my favorite. I was held captive throughout the entirety; rushing through it in just a few days! As usual, after finishing another fast paced Donlea piece, I can’t wait to get my next fix! But I have to admit.. this one brought me to tears. Underneath all of that nail biting anticipation, and aside from all the shocking and disturbing revelations, the core of this plot is absolutely heartbreaking. There’s no happy ending for this conglomeration of tragedies. But there’s light at the end of the tunnel. A bit of closure with Kelsey beginning the healing process. I’m hopeful to find out what lies ahead for her (a follow up/book 2 with her character would be fabulous). What a dark and thrilling ride this was!

Great story! Loved it!
Revisado: 06-11-24
I really like this author and all of his stories. They’re all captivating and exciting. It’s hard to put the book down- there are no good stopping points! And, not to brag, but I’m pretty good at figuring out what’s going to happen, however, there were some very surprising twists in this one. Some crazy unexpected things came to light in this book that truly impressed me because I did not any of it coming! The story was super enthralling I just couldn’t wait to get to the end. I stayed up all night finishing up this dark & mysterious adventure. I’ve already finished The Suicide House as well, so I’ll be waiting (very anxiously) for the next installment in the Rory Moore series. Great story and performance! 👍👍👍

Historia
The Girl of Sugar Beach is the most watched documentary in television history - a riveting, true-life mystery that unfolds over 12 weeks and centers on a fascinating question: Did Grace Sebold murder her boyfriend, Julian, while on a Spring Break vacation, or is she a victim of circumstance and poor police work? Grace has spent the last 10 years in a St. Lucian prison, and reaches out to filmmaker Sidney Ryan in a last, desperate attempt to prove her innocence. As Sidney begins researching, she uncovers issues that were all overlooked during the original investigation.

The End
Revisado: 06-08-24
Great author, good story, bad ending. I’m not going to get specific about the ending of this book because I don’t want to spoil it or give anything away - I’ll just say that I’m disappointed. I have a lot of appreciation for plot twists and surprise/unexpected endings - but this one didn’t sit right with me. It wasn’t believable (and it was borderline ridiculous). So far, I’ve enjoyed all of the Donlea works I’ve read (and I’m about to start another one in a few minutes); usually they’re really juicy & enthralling stories that I can’t put down. Don’t get me wrong.. This one was nothing short of exciting & intriguing; it had me hooked and in a hurry to reach the end. I was just bitter about this particular story ending (it’s just how I felt personally). I’m still a huge fan though! And I’m ready for the next one!

Historia
Avery Mason, host of American Events, knows the subjects that grab a TV audience’s attention. Her latest story - a murder mystery laced with kinky sex, tragedy, and betrayal - is guaranteed to be ratings gold. New DNA technology has allowed the New York medical examiner’s office to make its first successful identification of a 9/11 victim in years. The twist: The victim, Victoria Ford, had been accused of the gruesome murder of her married lover. In a chilling last phone call to her sister, Victoria begged her to prove her innocence.

Two stories in one
Revisado: 06-04-24
We’re led to believe that this story is about a murder case in which Victoria Ford was accused of perpetrating, right before her death occurred in the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attack. But that story is more of an afterthought. The real story here is much more about Avery - her past, present, as well as her future plans for the ghosts of her past. There is also a bit of a love affair intertwined in this one. I like when different plot lines are rolled in together like this, but I do wish there would have been more focus on the featured storyline. Avery was on a mission to discover and expose the truth of Victoria’s plight, learning how her dying wishes sincerely beg for her name to be cleared of any guilt or wrongdoing. But Avery has another mission, which is dramatically more impactful and personal. The ultimate outcomes of this novel are deliciously surprising and I absolutely love books that drop hand grenades into the predictions I’ve made for the ending. Bravo on that note! Excellent storytelling from start to finish! 🩷

A story I haven’t heard before!
Revisado: 05-26-24
Finally, a fresh, new and unique plot! It’s not just another account of girls gone missing in the night and turning up dead sometime later. There’s already a million stories about young women being kidnapped, held captive, raped and murdered, etc.. But this book has an exceptionally rare approach. This story was so intriguing and fascinating - I stayed enthralled from beginning to end. I also appreciate that slap of reality in the face, of the truth about how we are all drawn to the stories of true horror and tragedy that people really fall victim to. If we’re being honest, most of us can’t turn away - we want to know what happened to the girl or boy that disappeared. Maybe we care because it’s awful and we’re praying for a safe return. Or maybe it’s the detective in us that hopes to find out the truth and solve the puzzle. Or maybe we are just horrified by something we think could never happen to any of us. But it happens anyway, all the time. And it’s really scary! I think stories like this keep us on our toes and remind us to be careful and vigilant. In any case, this book was an excellent listen; I really enjoyed it!

Another Great Story by my Favorite Author!
Revisado: 05-16-24
I love all of Jodi P’s books! This one was no exception! I was pulled in and couldn’t finish it fast enough. I really appreciate how this author always challenges us readers to ask ourselves the tough questions. I don’t have any children (I wasn’t fortunate enough to be able to), but I can just imagine how this mother must have felt. And the horror of the mistake made is just heart breaking. It’s actually quite unsettling. Half of me is very angry and the other half feels compassionate and understanding. My problem with this character is this: she’s clearly extremely jaded by the failings of the very legal system she fights quite vigorously and passionately for in her career - so why is she a DA and work mostly on child sexual assault cases? If the system never works and she can’t succeed more than 1% of the time, then WHY does she do it? In fact I find it troubling how she’s so completely cognizant of how insufficient that system is, that when her own circumstances put her own child in the chair usually occupied by the victims she often fights for, she is 1000% certain that the law will fail her too - so much so, that without giving a thought to the possibility that it “could” work - she decides to take the law into her own hands and exact the justice/punishment she is convinced the perp will not be met with if she were to allow the system the chance to do its job. She knows the law will fail her and her child. So what is the message we’re supposed to receive as readers? It’s certainly not one of high morality. It’s not about doing what’s right instead of wrong, or facing real consequences for breaking laws (that prosecutors are meant to painstakingly fight for and enforce)! The irony is very thick & heavy in this book! It’s definitely worth a read, especially if you like stories that invite you to deeply examine yourself. It will break your heart and possibly mend it back together (depending on your own perspective). This is a story that you are not likely to ever forget. I hope I didn’t give away too much.

What are the right words to describe perfection?
Revisado: 03-23-24
Nobody really does it quite like Jodi. This story is magnetic, and pulls you all the way in, down to the very last word. The plot and content are already so riveting, but the cherry on top is the way that Jodi tells the story… I think reading (listening to) this story is kind of like meeting your soulmate. Everything falls right into place. It’s exactly the way it should be. It’s thrilling, devastating, powerful and poignant. The emotions are so raw, you can’t help but feel like you personally know these characters. Why they do what they do and feel how they feel. This story will leave you with a better understanding of turmoil and suffering from an angle you have probably never experienced or explored before. I’m grateful for authors like this, who remind us that we all have both good and bad in each of us. And our actions have real consequences. What kind of an impact do you want to have? How do you want to be remembered? If Jodi’s goal is to make us ask ourselves those questions, then I must say “Bravo, mission accomplished… and Well done”!

Revisado: 02-29-24
I really like how there is still a question about what happens to our story’s heroine. Not everything has to be tied up with a neat little bow in the end. It’s okay to leave some things to the imagination. I think this book was perfect. Just the right amount of twists and turns and questions and answers. Good job Ashley! Well done you Crime Junkie Rockstar! 😸

The End is Missing
Revisado: 01-12-24
The whole story was absolutely fantastic, until the very end. I couldn’t believe it! I can’t stand it when stories end, leaving so many unanswered questions. That’s not an ending, it’s a total cop out, and I’m truly disappointed. If there is a part 2, then I will be thrilled to read it, so I can find out how the story ends. But if there is not a follow up book, then I will feel cheated. This book was a nail biter and a super creative, unique story that had me totally enthralled the entire way through, and then… nothing! No climactic ending - just a big gaping hole, making me scratch my head and wonder why! Why would this story come to a close without an ending. It’s devastating!

One sunny August afternoon, the residents of Cedar Close throw their annual summer barbecue. Children play in the cherry-tree lined street, tables are laden with food, and the wine is flowing. For Laurie Mills, it’s her first time meeting the neighbours. And it’s the first time she discovers her husband, Robert, is having an affair. Cedar Close has always been a nice place to live - a quiet suburban street where everyone looks out for one another and bad things don’t happen. Great Story
Revisado: 02-14-23
I enjoyed this book from start to finish. I’ve already purchased the rest of the books in the Dan Riley series and I’m sure I’ll be just as happy with those as I’ve been with the first two books.
However, I’m not entirely sure I love how all of these stories have a psychotic serial killer, that’s always female. I have a feeling that’s a pattern or commonality in the whole series.
Yeah, there’s a narcissistic man who’s mainly behind what drove these women to act on their insane-psycho-killer instincts, but I do hope one of these stories will break off from this repetition and present us with a male antagonist who is responsible for all of the killings, lol! I personally would like to have some unpredictability, too.
But, with way, the stories are NOT boring and there are very likable characters (like Dan - he’s a very relatable and genuinely believable/real kind of guy). He’s what carries the plots and makes me look forward to the next case.
Great Story!
