Historia
Jo Beckett is looking for love. She's fallen for a few boys, but for some reason, they've never fallen for her. One night, at a party she didn't even want to go to, she finds out the truth. Those boys, who are on the wrestling team she manages, consider her just a “practice girl”—the popular term for girl who’s good enough to hook up with but not to date.

Radical Empathy
Revisado: 07-14-22
Practice Girl is great. Laure manages the magic trick of being of the moment while not being mired in the moment. So, while at first it seems that it is going to be a book chiefly about how a young woman is treated poorly by the young men around her, over the course of the book it becomes much more about what force she is able to bring to bear to even the playing field. It is the surprising nature of that “force” which was interesting to me. Laure obviously has great empathy for all of her characters, not just the protagonist, and it is this empathy that propels the book toward its conclusion. The reader is perfectly matched to the material. Do yourself a favor, listen to it.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

I am a sucker for the Iliad and I loved this telling of it. I will never see it a different way.

A great ride
Revisado: 04-04-22
I loved this book and I thought the reader was near perfect.
City of Villains is fully imagined. It was easy to see the Scar and Legacy kids and the Narrows and the whole mad city that surrounds them. This is a great book for anyone who has suspected that there is more under the surface of things than meets the eye. This is a great book for anyone who feels like they were born into a world whose magic knew no bounds only to see that magic diminished and commodified and sold back to them. This is great book for anyone who has been surprised by someone who they had initially written off or been surprised the weakness of someone they idolized. Not a dull moment here. Looking forward to the movie.

Historia
Leonard Cohen wrote the poems in Book of Longing - his first book of poetry in more than 20 years after 1984's Book of Mercy - during his five-year stay at a Zen monastery on Southern California's Mount Baldy, and in Los Angeles, Montreal, and Mumbai. This dazzling collection of poetry is timeless, meditative, and often darkly humorous.
