Both infuriating and satisfying somehow
Revisado: 11-04-23
I really don't know how to rate this book series. The writing itself is very well done, as are the characters Different POVs for different characters very much feel different, especially for Logan compared to the other characters. However, the series is depressing. One of the overall messages seems to be that people don't get what they deserve, and this is repeated with a lot of characters doing very awful things.
However, the fact that this was happening in the books and that I wasn't expecting it, made this a pretty thought-provoking book series. Even though I'm not sure I'd really say that I "liked" or "enjoyed" these books per se, I did get something out of them I haven't gotten out of any other book series, and for that reason I do recommend reading these books.
Just maybe go into it expecting to be depressed.

Just sort of meh
Revisado: 05-27-23
This comes out more like a really obviously "The White Dragon" inspired fanfiction than anything. The whole system and world is pretty rigid and contrived, I would have not had a problem with it were it a LitRPG novel, but as it is, the whole thing doesn't really feel real to me. Neither do the characters, although that could be a problem with the narration rather than the writing. It's fine to listen to, I got through the book, but I won't be reading the rest of the books.

Startlingly good book
Revisado: 03-29-23
I read this when I was a kid, but I didn't remember it very well. I went into it fully expecting that I'd find issues with it, perhaps it would feel dated (although I do love old books, so, that wasn't hugely likely).
Nope. I found it extremely compelling, easy to understand, and the narrator very pleasant to listen to for both male and female characters. Love this book and this is definitely one of my favorites.

Lifeless, boring
Revisado: 02-05-23
I cannot get into this. I felt no connection to the main character or his situation, and just nothing was interesting. I can't even really remember much of the plot beyond the first chapter.
I will say I also tried reading this book in physical format, briefly, and the actual writing was a lot worse. Audible formatting definitely makes bad craft workable.

Entertaining, but a little shallow
Revisado: 02-27-22
It's funny and entertaining, but somehow seems to fall a little flat. I think the lack of any real sense of threat hurts this a little. Still, good to listen to when you can't pay full attention to a book.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

This may have saved my life
Revisado: 02-24-22
I heard myself in the first chapter of this, and throughout the entire rest of this novel, more strongly than I would've thought possible in someone else's story. I saw my own deepest darkness, and I realized exactly how close I have going towards a completely identical decision - same reasons, same thoughts, everything - that she made in the first chapter. This novel was like hearing myself speak despair out loud, in exactly the way that gives me something else to maybe think about. Not thinking about the future I wish was, but the problems in front of me. I don't know why yet, none of my words capture my feeling, but somehow all of this makes me more okay with living, all the suck and all, and I didn't even realize how much I hadn't been. And *that* leads into an understanding that I want to make it better, the life I have. Not try to reach for some life I think I should have, not *be* better or someone else, take the pieces in this life that are hurting me, and heal that.

Amazing read, fantastic narrator
Revisado: 08-24-20
This is the first Verne book I've read, and if this is any indication of the general quality of writing, I will have to read all the rest. Holding up over time: First, I've noticed no real oddities in diction or phrasing. This may be because the narrator makes everything feel completely natural. While some of it is a bit dated in terms of how characters speak to each other, that only makes sense for the time it is set in. The description of characters, emotive and otherwise, and the environment around them, is beautiful and fluid. The occasionally detached, highly scientific account of things is entirely consistent with the POV character. Plot: This isn't a traditional plot, and I love that about it. This is at its heart an adventure, an exploration into a life under sea. There are many lines simply describing passing fish, but this is only natural since the POV character is a naturalist, and it serves to show the great variety ecosystem that exists below the waves. Yet despite being an adventure, there is enough conflict between the motivations of the characters that it remains intriguing and impactful. Narrator: The narrator's great -- excellent pacing, good conveyance of emotion, distinct character representation.

Since time immemorial the Spires have sheltered humanity, towering for miles over the mist-shrouded surface of the world. Within their halls aristocratic houses have ruled for generations, developing scientific marvels, fostering trade alliances, and building fleets of airships to keep the peace. Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship Predator. Fiercely loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy's shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels.

Skyship battles. 'Nuff said.
Revisado: 06-26-19
I found the plot not super engaging and oddly lacking in substance, and I never got a very good picture of how the world was actually laid out. Despite that, the pace of the story was clear and well-kept up, no lagging points, and I found myself attached to characters despite (or possibly because of) a somewhat melodramatic read by the narrator.
Where this book really shines, though, are the skyship battles. EPIC!
