Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Historia
Douglas Petersen may be mild-mannered, but behind his reserve lies a sense of humor that seduces beautiful Connie into a second date...and eventually into marriage. Now, almost three decades later, they live more or less happily in the London suburbs with their moody seventeen year-old son, Albie. Then Connie tells him she thinks she wants a divorce. The timing couldn’t be worse. Connie has planned a month-long tour of European capitals, a chance to experience the world’s greatest works of art as a family, and she can’t bring herself to cancel. And maybe going ahead is for the best anyway? Douglas is privately convinced that this landmark trip will rekindle the romance in the marriage, and might even help him to bond with Albie. Narrated from Douglas’s endearingly honest, slyly witty, and at times achingly optimistic point of view, Us is the story of a man trying to rescue his relationship with the woman he loves, and learning how to get closer to a son who’s always felt like a stranger.

Historia
When Elizabeth Keane returns to Ireland after her mother’s death, she’s focused only on saying goodbye to that dark and dismal part of her life. Her childhood home is packed solid with useless junk, her mother’s presence already fading. But within this mess, she discovers a small stash of letters — and ultimately, the truth. Forty years earlier, a young woman stumbles from a remote stone house, the night quiet except for the constant wind that encircles her as she hurries deeper into the darkness away from the cliffs and the sea.

Unkind to infertile women
Revisado: 11-09-19
While I enjoyed the narrator and the story very much at first, I was so shocked by the lack of empathy from any of the characters toward the infertile family member. More importantly that as a character she’s depicted as “baby crazy,” crazed, single-minded, and oblivious to the expense of tackling infertility. The women who can conceive have a right to, Nettie does not, despite her very real women’s health issues. This will be a cruel read for any infertile women, to those who’ve miscarried recently, or especially in second trimester. Infertility is a terrible heartbreak and, yes, a financial burden. But few women—even those of means—ask for financial help from family members. They cobble together what they can and work hard and go through hell and are extraordinarily grateful mothers. The stigma and lack of empathy for infertile women hurts. Infertility isn’t about being baby crazy. It’s about wanting a family—children and grandchildren. IVF costs money, but not less than adoption, which is in no way potentially less heartbreaking. Also, IVF costs less than a car—especially a dang Land Rover. We watch a child be allowed to break an expensive art vase, then are reminded once AGAIN about IVF, like ALL health issues, costing money. I really liked the daughter-in-law narrator so much. I felt she would have had complete empathy for an infertile woman. It was so sad to learn that none of the characters nor the story really did at all. It just hurt.

Historia
Craig Ferguson has defied the odds his entire life. He has failed when he should have succeeded and succeeded when he should have failed. The fact that he is neither dead nor in a locked facility (at the time of printing) is something of a miracle in itself. In Craig’s candid and revealing memoir, listeners will get a look into the mind and recollections of the unique and twisted Scottish American who became a national hero for pioneering the world’s first TV robot skeleton sidekick and reviving two dudes in a horse suit dancing as a form of entertainment.
