What Desmond wrote is basically a autobiography based on his understanding of China. He was born in Shanghai and went to some elementary school there. He grow up in colonial Hong Kong and had his undergraduate education in the Midwest of US. He worked in HK and relocated to Beijing. He talks and acts like someone whose being feed too much of the Western value. From the book, he dose not seem to have any moral value or principle. The only thing he brags about is that his ex-wife and he follows the rules. To be frank, in China follow the rules is the lowest barely acceptable form to be accepted by the people. He wanted to make China "great" and was told to have patriotism which there is no indication in the book. His wife is a party member and a Christian with connection to Aunty Zhang. Without his ex-wife, he would be nothing. He likes wine and knows rich people. He does not seem to appreciate anyone in his life. The books tone is full or arrogance. There is not a single mention of 老百姓 in China. He was just ripping the privilege of the unstable business. environment in China. There is nothing more nothing less.

This is similar to the version for the first 10 chapters of the Analects by the author/narrator. If you have not tried it, I highly recommend listening to the Analects by the same narrator. The narrator gives his own interpretation of the Lao Zi using cultural and historic examples. Certain examples uses Chinese history and it is easy for someone who is not well versed in PRC history to get the feeling that this is biased propaganda. It is not just a mundane reading and explaining of the classical text but rather an analysis of Lao Zi and his thoughts and actions through the 81 chapters. The narrator recommends the reader to start the Lao Zi from the end to the beginning to avoid confusion of 无为.
