Beautiful "in the trenches" story of people fighting all kinds of thugs and supposed law officers to gain entry to this great nation! Godspeed! Beautifully done.

There is some graphic violence, but the book is true to life. Masterfully written.

Meh. But "meh" for Barbara Kingsolver?

As I was listening/reading this book, I was searching my brain frantically. Who could I talk to? To whom could I speak my truth? I hated the book.

Well, let me temper that. Barbara Kingsolver is the writer who scratches my every itch, the storyteller who still takes me out of this world and allows me be another place without consequence except possibly the opportunity to love and grow in my deepest brain.

I didn't like Demon. I knew the kid, I'd seen this place, lived this life. I was sorry for them, the characters, who were so doomed. I was sorry for the readers about to enter that hell.

There's a reason readers continue a novel that makes them feel bad: they are looking for redemption. I was, and I get plenty of that from Ms. Kingsolver's other books. But I knew about a quarter of the way in that a) the world was about to be proven the craphole it is, yet again, and b) Barbara Kingsolver was going to be the one flushing the toilet.

The story has great tales within, some decent, some doomed to hell with the majority. Overall, I just cannot in good conscience recommend this title to anyone. The world has turned evil ever since Barack Obama won the presidency and racism became "cool" again. I can't egg it on by reading and recommending books like Demon Copperhead. Any number of things might have happened, but this book was unable to offer hope for anyone "regardless last page."

I swear, if the story hadn't been so depressing, the "regardless" issues of the syntax with Demon were enough to make me scream anyway. "Rednecks," such as they are portrayed, do not sound like this. I've seen and known people who would be called "trash" by most, but nicknames don't happen like these and, Jesus, God, they are not all worthless.

I think I'm still too angry about the sadly false ending and too mortified by the way Tennesseans were portrayed to write anything kinder at present. And I'd KILL to sit and learn at the feet of Barbara Kingsolver. But I'll never buy this one again.

I'm sorry. I love science fiction and I love humor of all sorts. These stories were just not my cup of bourbon. I needed a pint to get through it. I didn't have a pint, so I didn't get through it, and I was so relieved to turn this off early! I'm sorry. Seventh grade boys might like this. Is that Scalzi's target audience? Anyway, this review sucks, too, but I just had to have my say. Ick. Ugh. I'm too old to waste even this much time.

This book is ridiculous. the narration was definitely successful in the portrayal of the high school aged kid, but everything about this is insulting to young adults everywhere. the author has created a mental hospital where unicorns live and are universally loved and scorned at the same time. The parents get off far too easily. The very young psychiatrist is just plain not smart, and reacts to manipulation like, well, a middle schooler. Nothing of value was taught in the telling or learned in the reading of this story. The premise was wonderful. Not one sentence of the book did a good job of portraying or supporting said premise. Forced myself to finish.

The narration may have killed this book. since I can no longer see to read, it's hard to tell. The use of a pause, or in one case "blank" in an attempt to avoid using the shooter's name was awkward at best, but not much else was good either.

The story was incomplete. There was no character growth. Except for Miles, I'm not certain anyone grew at all.

Huge pet peeve. Adding "asexual" to the so-called LGBTQ spectrum was stupid. I mean, I'm sorry to be so blunt, but I've used that term to describe myself for forty five years. It isn't a brand new diagnosis, and , in my opinion, it was used incorrectly in this text anywaty.

The story had a noble goal. if the protagonist had actually gotten around to achieving that goal, the book might have had a shot. As it was, this was a wasted work. Nothing ventured, nothing gained? Never were truer words spoken. A ten year old might like the book.

I hear the song in my head. We are connected, we affect people knowingly and unknowingly. We could probably all tell stories all day for a week about just strangers, but then we have family, friends, employees, employers, doctors, lawyers and Indian chiefs. And the stories we can't tell, but which we still are a part of. We save lives and we end lives, create love and create joy, and we touch people from here in Signal Mountain, TN all the way to Togo, Africa without knowing it. we are everywhere, even living in one room.

I can't forget to say, though, despite the philosophical gains my brain gained from this tiny book, I laughed my ass off through most chapters. Backman is a genius.

Beautiful, funny interview. I wish I could have been there! I loved the the audience questions and comments, but Joan's total honesty made the whole thing worthwhile.

This is a wonderful but tragic story almost perfectly crafted by John Grisham. The "almost"? There are a couple of places in the book where the okay court scenes were just too much. And, as with real life, there were far too many unanswered questions.

This is a great read on so many level. The storytelling is amazing, courtesy of the author and the narrators. Within its bounds, this book uncovers a
horrifying. history of my home state, Tennessee. Told through two points of view, from this time and from another further in the past. I worried it would be icky romance-- can't do those--but it was about the ties that bind, the growing up years. Amazingly deft writing, with powerful characters made low and the lowest among lifted up.

The narrator was just horrible in this story, but the story was poorly written. The author tried on several occasions to make the listener think, "Aha! That's the guilty person," but it wasn't. I love mysteries. This one is just a tease.
