The Bear’s Ears is a holy place. It is vast, and assaulted by those, like the anti protagonists in this story, who would steal its treasures. Hillerman fails to communicate its sanctity, choosing instead to give us a melodrama of romance and killing, which completely obliterated the tragedy of the defacing of the ancestors and theft of fossils.
Delanna Studi is Cherokee. I am glad an indigenous woman performed the narration. But she needs to take lessons from narrators like Christina Delaine and Eduardo Ballerini. What might have been a decent story got buried in a narration almost impossible to listen to.
Though I know it will exist long after we human have left, the story and narration conveyed to me a lack of respect for this most holy of places, The Bear’s Ears. All I can do is lend my prayers to those of The People, to turn back the tide of destruction in favor of sovereign strength.

The Shadow and the Many Lesbians

Sapphic in the Shadows is a wildly inaccurate historical piece of erotic lesbiana, a turn on the lesbian pulp fiction genre in which older lesbian brings out younger lesbian etc. and their adventures. The younger lesbian gradually learns to stand up to the older. The younger gets a girlfriend with whom she is happy. Older lesbian is a private eye who hires the younger one to join her agency. They investigate the disappearance of several working girls, discovering an organized crime group, “The Shadow”, and a bunch of crooked cops.

Maybe some the historical details are true, like the party in which many women are having sex with each other in each other’s presence. I don’t know. I do know that the authors describe one character’s behavior as “passive-aggressive”, a term coined by WWll psychiatrists in 1945. Also, the use of “info dump” to describe a character giving info to the newspaper was highly unlikely in 1920.

The narrator unfortunately mispronounces several words. She says Ms., formal millennial term for any woman, instead of Miss, the classic title for an unmarried woman in the early 20th century; gauche becomes gaash , and furrowing is somehow farrowing. She also reads rapidly, so the listener doesn’t know where paragraphs begin and end. We don’t get to really enjoy the story that way.

For all my nitpicking, take a listen to “Sapphic”. Once I got over my cheap self I enjoyed it, and not just the sex scenes either, though they are very pleasant indeed.
