Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

In-depth behind the scenes story of Covid-19 in the U.S.
Revisado: 01-29-23
Great writing. Engaging. Well-researched and edited. My only reservation is the performance. Although the narrator’s voice is strong, clear and mostly listenable, I get the feeling that its unrelenting consistency, and sometime premature pauses within sentences, is the result of computer generation (AI or otherwise). I prefer when real people read real books, inconsistencies and all. This voice, if it was real, was working hard to be robotic and uncomprehending.

Historia
For decades, biology has been dominated by the study of genetic information. Information is important, but it is only part of what makes us alive. Our inheritance also includes our living metabolic network, a flame passed from generation to generation, right back to the origin of life. In Transformer, biochemist Nick Lane reveals a scientific renaissance that is hiding in plain sight-how the same simple chemistry gives rise to life and causes our demise.

Great Book - Bad Reading
Revisado: 09-23-22
Nick Lane’s work is fascinating and insightful, but the reader’s performance makes listening to the book difficult. Instead of reading naturally, he halts on every other word. These interruptions make the audible version of the book unlistenable for me. It’s possible this reading style works well for others, but be forewarned that listening may not be a comfortable experience.

Historia
Spinoza's brilliant metaphysical system was derived neither from reality nor experience. Starting from basic assumptions, with a series of geometric proofs he built a universe which was also God, one and the same thing, the classic example of pantheism. Although his system seems an oddity today, Spinoza's conclusions are deeply in accord with modern thought, from science (the holistic ethics of today's ecologists) to politics (the idea that the state exists to protect the individual).

An Opinion
Revisado: 03-21-22
If you want to be told what to think about Spinoza without doing any work to form your newfound opinion, this is the book for you. The book is factual and an easy listen. However, it conveys little with regard to the matters to which Spinoza dedicated the waking, thoughtful hours of his existence.

Historia
There is a vast class of things that science has so far almost entirely neglected. They are central to the understanding of physical reality both at an everyday level and at the level of the most fundamental phenomena in physics, yet have traditionally been assumed to be impossible to incorporate into fundamental scientific explanations. They are facts not about what is (the actual) but about what could be (counterfactuals).

Why are good readings so rare?
Revisado: 10-04-21
The book introduces some important new ideas that are well worth listening to, but the voice reading these ideas is so monotonous as to induce either sleep or nausea, depending on your level of interest. A purely computer-generated voice of the same timbre, quality and accent would be easier to listen to than this. At least then one wouldn’t expect it to have some comprehension of the words it is voicing.

Self Comes to Mind is a nuanced and original chronicle of the evolution of the human brain. It reveals how the brain's development of a self becomes a challenge to nature's indifference and opens the way for the appearance of culture, a radical break in the course of evolution.

Great Book. Dumbed Down Performance
Revisado: 05-05-21
I just can’t listen to an important work being read as though to a five year old at bed time. I tried.
