Historia
Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Outstanding writing

I am not a gamer. Never played a game in my life, yet I consider this book to be so well written, so poetic and full of symmetry and a beautiful way to write about people. It is one of the more beautiful books I have ever experienced. My only complaint is I wished for more at the end.

Historia
Ten-year-old Pearl Spence is a daydreamer, playing make-believe to escape life in Oklahoma's Dust Bowl in 1935. The Spences have their share of misfortune, but as the sheriff's family, they've got more than most in this dry, desolate place. They're who the town turns to when there's a crisis or a need. Pearl is proud of her loving, strong family, though she often wearies of tracking down her mentally impaired older sister or wrestling with her grandmother's unshakable belief in a God. Then a mysterious man bent on revenge tramps into her town of Red River.

Very Good. Highly Recommend
Revisado: 11-03-24
I listened to all three books about Pearl Spene right in a row. The stories are thoughtful, covering about a year and a half of Pearl's life, yet three different periods or issues in the 1930s. The telling of the story through Pearl's eyes is creative as is the character as a whole. It's easy to fall in love with her, care for her and admire her. The first book has some dark scenes while the others deal with loss and family in a different way. The stories are engaging, so much that if she wrote the books all over again through the mother's or father's eyes, I would listen again.
I join the others in saying the narrator is amazing. I wasn't sure I would agree in the first few minutes given the southern sounds of calling in the first minutes, but she is amazing, mastering 20 different voices and flowing in and out of dialogue quickly. One of the best I ever heard and I own about 100 Audible books.
The faith angles and exploration for me were a nice touch too, as were the literature references. Highly recommend.

They last spoke as teens, but on a country road twelve years later, a surprise encounter reunites ornithologist Celia Burke with veterinary surgeon Burnaby Hayes, and they plunge into the most unusual romance of her life. After a decade of marriage, Celia and Burnaby have found a unique and beautiful rhythm. Then tragedy strikes while Celia hunts for the nest of a research hawk near the Snake River. Reeling with grief, she’s certain Burnaby won’t understand her anguish or forgive the choice that initiated it.

I picked this book because I liked another of the author's and was pleasantly surprised to find some same characters. She writes well about marriage, science, faith, and relationships in a lovely story. I hope there is a third about Agie as an adult.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

My first by this author and her words and descriptions have such beauty. She's an excellent writer, one of the best I have listened to. The story reminded me of To Kill a Mockingbird as well as The Kite Runner. I will listen to more of her books.

Historia
Bertie Jenkins has spent forty years serving as a midwife for her community in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. Out of all the mothers she’s tended, none affects her more than the young teenager who shows up on her doorstep, injured, afraid, and expecting, one warm June day in 1943. As Bertie and her four sisters tenderly nurture Songbird back to health, the bond between the childless midwife and the motherless teen grows strong. But soon Songbird is forced to make a heartbreaking decision that will tear this little family apart.

Captures the Heart of God
Revisado: 01-20-24
Some may think this is Christian fluff at first, but the story has depth and in my own experience, captures the way in which God meets suffering with his amazing ability to bring multi-dimensional healing, restoration, and wholeness. Worth the listen, especially for anyone recovering from loss or sorrow and need a reminder of God's mysterious plans to help get them through..

The Serenity crew head to Yell City, one of the settlements on Abel, a moon in the Rim. Their job: track down the killers of a local lawyer shot dead in the streets by a local gang. Their client is Annie Roberts, the eighteen-year-old daughter of the murdered man. Lucky for them, Annie Roberts is more than capable of handling herself. Unlucky for them, the job is lot more complicated than they at first think it is. Annie’s father is not just the victim of local gang violence but also the target of some powerful men.

Least Favorite Firefly
Revisado: 08-14-23
I love the Firefly series for the way it gives us more time with well beloved characters, and I hope they write more. This one was my least favorite, though. I get what Una was trying to do, but Annie's character was annoying, and I don't care what she thinks of the crew. Her commentary was distracting and took away valuable time we could be directly enjoying the crew and their perspective. The crew was also split up for almost all the book in the same groups of two or three, limiting their overall interaction and giving us less of them together in diversity of interaction. And there was no Firefly as its own character. It was absent from the story. Overall, it felt like only a little taste of the crew and not a full Firefly adventure.

Historia
On a stifling summer day, an old Chevy Impala ignored the warning signals and was annihilated by the oncoming train. What no one realized until much later was that the driver had paused just before entering the tracks and kicked a small boy out of the car. A small boy with broken glasses who is clutching a notebook with all his might...but who never speaks.

Wonderful Surprise
Revisado: 05-17-23
This book was a wonderful surprise with three interwoven stories into one. It is also quite beautiful in terms of the themes of belonging and fatherhood complemented by what matters in life and a great natural setting. The narrator took a while for me to get used to, but the story is well worth it.

Historia
It's 1932, and Sullivan Harris is on the run. He promised the people of Kline, West Virginia, that he would find them water, but now he's failed and disappeared with their cash. Although he's determined to stay a step ahead of pursuers - like Jeremiah Weber - his resources are running low. Gainey Floyd is suspicious of Sulley's claim to be a dowser when he appears in town but reconsiders after he finds water. Rather, it's Sulley who grows uneasy when his success makes folks wonder if he can find more than water - like forgotten items or missing people.
