When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a terrifying creature arrives to demand retribution. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she knows about only from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not truly a beast, but one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled her world.

I tried, but didn't finish
Revisado: 05-25-24
Over 3 hours from the end I decided I'd had enough. I don't think it's the narrators fault, the protagonist is just constantly whiny &/or negative except for a brief period in the story. It's difficult to like any of the characters, as they all lie & treat each other cruelly. The world building was interesting.
Then *Spoiler Alert*
.
.
.
I find out the most abusive character ends up being a love interest, after tricking the main protagonist into a horrendous bargain that includes a surprise tattoo all over one arm with an eye that watches her. Stories of faeries seem to far too often seem to be an excuse to write stories of abuse.

Wow! Entertaining & surprising.
Revisado: 12-22-21
I admit I didn't know much about the Beastie Boys going in, having enjoyed their music but not listened to all of it nor tried to learn much about them. While they do get into some music history & musical equipment information it's still thoroughly entertaining to a music novice. The book definitely interesting on its own, but what was astounding was the incredible variety of guest narrators to tell different stories, voice different chapters. I'll probably go back to listen to parts to take some notes, especially to look up some of their influences & favorite songs. Definitely recommend.

Another wonderful story by Charles de Lint
Revisado: 08-16-21
I've been a fan of this author for a while, but his books are getting harder to find, many of his older works are out of print. Plus, while I still buy hard copies, I'm a slow reader. Point being I'm so glad this is now available as an audiobook. The villains are a bit darker than in much of his writing, but the story just as magical and eventually quite hopeful. The narrator did a wonderful job, changing voices and accents enough to easily differentiate the characters and beautifully narrating the story. The story is in a new setting than much of his writing. This time it's in both a fictional town similar to others in Cornwall and also a real town (though I didn't believe it, so Googled it) called Mousehole! He was sort a founder of Urban Fantasy, and this is another great example. Bits seeming not quite like fantasy, but the stories we hear of business people using their influence in illegal ways to make more money/power, but as with many of those sorts of tales they also use something slightly (or very) supernatural to help them. Trying not to give spoilers, just saying that there are a lot of threads in this story. As with nearly all his books is the shining thread that is a love of music.

Eating is an indispensable human activity. As a result, whether we realize it or not, the drive to obtain food has been a major catalyst across all of history, from prehistoric times to the present. Epicure Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin said it best: "Gastronomy governs the whole life of man."

Educational & Entertaining
Revisado: 07-23-21
Incredibly detailed, informative & interesting. Some things are glanced over due to time & recorded history. For those reasons a heavier focus on western and eurocentric areas. Though I think he does a good job of covering most regions and an immense span of time. I found this author/instructor through one of the free lectures on Audible & now not only do I want to find more of his books and the ones that he mentioned, but it really brought back up my interest in cultural anthropology. I love that our resources to learn are no longer limited to exclusive, expensive, and hard to get into University courses.

Soaring ambition. Unwavering integrity. Billie Joe Armstrong isn’t the first punk to negotiate mainstream success, but he might be its most undisguised example. In Welcome to my Panic, Green Day’s iconic front man holds nothing back as he tracks listeners though his deeply personal and artistic journey in raw detail. Matching his emotional storytelling with new, exclusive, recordings of Green Day’s biggest hits, Armstrong chronicles the seminal moments in his life: the trauma and triumphs that have come to define him.

Short listen, but covers a lot of time & info on a handful of songs. It's more like a podcast than a book or theatrical show, but it works.

Is bourbon the quintessential American liquor? Bourbon is not just alcohol - the amber-colored drink is deeply ingrained in American culture and tangled in American history. From the early days of raw corn liquor to the myriad distilleries that have proliferated around the country today, bourbon is a symbol of the United States. This course traces bourbon's entire history, from the 1700s, with Irish, Scottish, and French settlers setting up stills and making distilled spirits in the New World, through today's booming resurgence.

Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.
