Historia
Minor Detail begins during the summer of 1949, one year after the war that the Palestinians mourn as the Nakba - the catastrophe that led to the displacement and exile of some 700,000 people - and the Israelis celebrate as the War of Independence. Israeli soldiers murder an encampment of Bedouin in the Negev desert, and among their victims, they capture a Palestinian teenager, and they rape her, kill her, and bury her in the sand. Many years later, in the near-present day, a young woman in Ramallah tries to uncover some of the details surrounding this particular rape and murder.

still a story for our times, sadly
Revisado: 10-20-23
As heartbreaking as I expected, it's precisely written. As important today as it ever was.

Historia
In this powerful, incisive work of social and self-exploration, Melnick blends personal essay with cultural criticism to explore Parton’s dual identities as a feminist icon and objectified sex symbol, identities that reflect the author’s own fraught history with rape culture and the arduous work of reclaiming her voice.

Excellent narrative weaving one’s life with one’s hero
Revisado: 07-23-23
Melnick is a terrific poet. Now I know her to be a powerful narrative writer. I learned to love Dolly Parton, thanks to Melnick. I learned how important it is for me to tell myself of my own trauma, as Melnick does. I know I’ll return to this text again, and continue to learn from it.

From the hate coming from Depp supporters
Revisado: 05-29-23
I thought this book could be more sympathetic toward Heard than it actually was.
The author comes across as brash. Bro-ish. Blasé.

Historia
Patty Schemel was a drummer at the epicenter of the Seattle grunge scene in the early '90s, best known for her work with the alternative rock band Hole. Hit So Hard begins with stories from a childhood informed by the AA meetings Schemel's parents hosted in the family living room. Their divorce triggered her rebellious adolescence and first forays into drinking at age 11, which coincided with her passion for punk rock and playing drums.

this book was exactly what i needed
Revisado: 07-31-22
Reading this in 2022 in this disembodied post covid world of madness, this book read by Patty in her own voice was exactly what i needed to bring me home to my roots in washington and the grunge scene that as a raised christian conservative kid--i had sadly zero part in, but would come to appreciate by my early twenties. there's an authenticity to this book & author, rare in this world. fully appreciated.

Historia
Brandi Carlile was born into a musically gifted, impoverished family on the outskirts of Seattle and grew up in a constant state of change, moving from house to house, trailer to trailer, 14 times in as many years. Though imperfect in every way, her dysfunctional childhood was as beautiful as it was strange, and as nurturing as it was difficult. At the age of five, Brandi contracted bacterial meningitis, which almost took her life, leaving an indelible mark on her formative years and altering her journey into young adulthood.
