Historia
With decades of hindsight, the peaceful end of the Cold War seems a foregone conclusion. But in the early 1980s, most experts believed the Soviet Union was strong, stable, and would last into the next century. Ronald Reagan entered the White House with no certainty of what would happen next, only an overriding faith in democracy and an abiding belief that Soviet communism—and the threat of nuclear war—must end. The Peacemaker reveals how Reagan’s White House waged the Cold War while managing multiple crises around the globe.

I am hooked. This author is masterful in establishing a verisimilitude of context, mystery and mission. He is overlooked and underrated. I will binge the rest of the Billy Boyle series.

Historia
It’s the eve of 1953, and Aloysius Archer is in Los Angeles to ring in the New Year with an old friend, aspiring actress Liberty Callahan, when their evening is interrupted by an acquaintance of Callahan’s: Eleanor Lamb, a screenwriter in dire straits. After a series of increasingly chilling events—mysterious phone calls, the same blue car loitering outside her house, and a bloody knife left in her sink—Eleanor fears that her life is in danger, and she wants to hire Archer to look into the matter. Archer suspects that Eleanor knows more than she’s saying.

Historia
In the summer of 2015, Ross Douthat was moving his family, with two young daughters and a pregnant wife, from Washington, DC, to a sprawling farmhouse in a picturesque Connecticut town when he acquired a mysterious and devastating sickness. It left him sleepless, crippled, wracked with pain - a shell of himself. After months of seeing doctors and descending deeper into a physical inferno, he discovered that he had a disease which, according to CDC definitions, does not actually exist.

Must reading for both chronic sufferers and attending doctors
Revisado: 03-17-22
Ross tells an interesting and compelling story in which he discovers much about Lyme disease and its many relatives. As important, he discovers some wisdom. His ordeal makes my own seem easy by comparison. There are lessons for everyone in the medical field, as well as those suffering from chronic health problems, especially those mysterious and poorly understood.

Historia
The year is 2008 and Samantha Kofer's career at a huge Wall Street law firm is on the fast track - until the recession hits and she gets downsized, furloughed, escorted out of the building. Samantha, though, is one of the "lucky" associates. She's offered an opportunity to work at a legal aid clinic for one year without pay, after which there would be a slim chance that she'd get her old job back. In a matter of days Samantha moves from Manhattan to Brady, Virginia, population 2,200, in the heart of Appalachia, a part of the world she has only read about.

Not the typical Grisham novel, but well done and worthwhile
Revisado: 01-28-22
Grisham weaves an engaging story of justice and accountability at the social level without conceding to do-Goodreads. At the same time, it is a coming of age story for a bright young lawyer who should have grown up a few years before.

Historia
There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Michael Connelly Delivers
Revisado: 11-17-21
No on compares to this author. But I hope he resolves whether and how to keep Harry Bosch alive. He’s a two dimensional character in this story, while his protagonist Renee Ballard is still not fully formed to follow in Bosch’s footsteps.

Historia
In the near future, advances in medicine and quantum computing make human cloning a reality. For the wealthy, cheating death is the ultimate luxury. To anticloning militants, it’s an abomination against nature. For young Constance “Con” D’Arcy, who was gifted her own clone by her late aunt, it’s terrifying. After a routine monthly upload of her consciousness - stored for that inevitable transition - something goes wrong. When Con wakes up in the clinic, it’s eighteen months later. Her recent memories are missing. Her original, she’s told, is dead.

Love the author, but this effort is a bust
Revisado: 10-03-21
Speculative fiction is a difficult genre for many reasons. I stayed with this story well into the second half, but gave up on the hope that FitzSimmons could save it. I will look forward to his next effort, but doubt I will give him a second chance at this type.

In Olen Steinhauer’s best seller An American Spy, reluctant CIA agent Milo Weaver thought he had finally put "Tourists" - CIA-trained assassins - to bed. A decade later, Milo is hiding out in Western Sahara when a young CIA analyst arrives to question him about a series of suspicious deaths and terrorist chatter linked to him. Their conversation is soon interrupted by a new breed of Tourists intent on killing them both, forcing them to run. As he tells his story, Milo is joined by colleagues and enemies from his long history in the world of intelligence.

Steinhauer is distracted or has lost his touch
Revisado: 03-25-21
The first three Milo Weaver novels are among my favorite intelligence/black ops thrillers. All are excellent, though The Last Exit is best in class. The Last Tourist does not measure up in any respect - plot, characters, story. It wanders into policy territory unnecessary and undermining the power struggles of this genre. Mr. Steinhauer, please focus and give us your best writing, not this pedestrian effort.

I have enjoyed this series very much, but almost gave up on The shadowers. The story moved slowly, the plot seemed weak, the characters seemed stilted. But I finished. The end/resolution was strong and satisfying.
