This one was well written. Some books in this genre veer into murder porn territory, while others are so dry they feel like somebody just sat down and started listing facts like a textbook. But this one is that good blend of news article and narrative nonfiction that makes it easy to follow and hard to put down. The story is crazy and stuck with me enough that I'm certain I'll listen to it again down the road. Definitely worth the credit.

stories about small towns can be better if the writer has a personal connection to the place. I think that factor enhanced what is a solid and complete well written account of the story. definitely worth the credit.

written in a excellent narrative form. the story is one of the few Cold war spy stories with an ending you could describe as happy when compared to the ending of other spy stories. the narrator is killer, and the level of detail is excellent. I've heard this story told through several TV show or podcast formats but this not only has information I hadn't heard but feels like the best way to tell this story. it's also the best way to tell the story of Aldrich Ames, as nothing more than a sad greedy footnote to one of the greatest Cold war stories ever told.

normally don't feel the need to write anything but I thought it was worth mentioning that after I used a credit to get this i hit play and listened to it from start to finish. the narrator has the super pleasant voice and overall the book has a good pace 👍

there are so many books about spouses killing spouses. it is my absolute least favorite subject within the spectrum of true story / crime narrative. but this book is really well written, the author totally nailed this one. the narrator was pretty dope too. my heart breaks for this dude's son. worth the credit.

like most books, especially books that come second in a series, it's almost nothing like the movie and a million times better than it's screen adaptation. if you've read Jurassic Park and you liked it, you're all but guaranteed to like this one just as much if not better.

An incredible story, and a perspective of world war II that's missing from American entertainment. I sense that people who find most books about war uninteresting would probably make an exception for this. shortly after I started listening to it my wife who does not find war stories particularly interesting found herself listening as we were cleaning, and proceeded to make excuses to continue listening throughout. as a result, the cat we just adopted is named Sterling now.

interesting, detailed, easy to follow, with a coherent narrative, and the personalities of the people involved are painted so vividly. really enjoyed this one 👍👍

such a dope book, didn't appreciate it in high school for several reasons, but mainly because I didn't really read it. in the years since I've read it a couple times but I always find myself pretty amazed at the hypnotic flow of the narrative, and the flawed humanity of every person in the story. I just wish we could have a high quality audiobook presentation read by Truman himself. don't get me wrong this narrator nailed it. but damn do I love capote's voice lol. it's pretty rare you come across a writer who is as entertaining as their books.

I don't usually bother to write anything and just rate a book with stars but this true story reads like a novel, regardless of the complex story it tells. enjoyed it so much I felt like I had to put my two cents in.

regardless of the overused idiom "don't judge a book by its cover", when I purchased this book it didn't have cover art in the audible app. I kind of felt hesitant to buy it based on that fact alone (which is pretty ridiculous) but my hunger for a comprehensive story about 'the butcher of flatlands' overcame my trepidation about buying a book with no cover.

it's rare you find a true crime story involving so many murders, in which one of its heros is not a member of law enforcement, and is instead technically a well established career criminal. The central character in this book whose eyes we get to glimpse the story through is Dominic Montiglio, a decorated Vietnam veteran. The authors do a great job conveying the complexity of his situation, and we get the best look inside the DeMeo crew we'll probably ever get.

I feel like this story is often overlooked because of John Gotti's attention hungry attitude. The story of Dominic Montiglio, Nino Gaggi, Roy Demeo, and the Gemini Lounge is so much more interesting, violent, and complex, than the story of John Gotti stumbling his way through the Gambino family and into prison.
