Historia
For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

When legends come to life, the world trembles from a single name. Ronin. Once-heroes from a different age, they wield elemental powers: wind, water, fire, stone, forest, sun, moon, flesh, and metal. At the same time, a young man discovers his best friend with a sword in her stomach and dark wings sprouting from her back. Guards rush to the scene and accuse him of the act, and he is forced to flee.

SO Slow
Revisado: 01-02-24
I tried to get through this one, but even TGR's narration couldn't save it for me...this is the first time it didn't work. There is a lot of reliance on stereotypes of genre and neither the places nor the characters are described with loving detail. To connect, I need to root for someone and see what makes them special. To want to inhabit the places, the scenery and towns need to come alive with picturesque detail. This story describes actions without inner monologues to connect with a characters feelings and thoughts. Made it to about midway and just didn't care about anyone.

Historia
Star of stage, film, and television Alan Cumming delivers a virtuoso performance playing every role in the National Theatre of Scotland's bold presentation of Shakespeare's chilling tale of desire, ambition, and the supernatural. This radical reimagining of one of Shakespeare's most deeply psychological plays is set in a psychiatric unit in which Cumming is the lone patient. Channeling the story of Macbeth, he is inhabited in turn by each of the characters of the drama, including some of Shakespeare's most complex and troubled creations.

Beautiful Adaptation
Revisado: 09-28-22
I love Alan Cumming everything I've seen, so it comes as no surprise that he nailed this too. He creates so many voices, and the drama is so expertly rendered.

Historia
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

Not for me
Revisado: 02-08-22
if I could return this book I would. I thought I would get used to the reader's voice but in the end it sounded more like an announcement in an airport metro, I gave it 10 chapters to get interesting, but for me, it was an abysmal failure. Every single character or situation seems to be derivative and relies heavily on stereotypes so that it wasn't even very entertaining.

Good Foundation
Revisado: 08-28-18
Mixed feelings on this book as it was a pretty disjointed story that will serve as a good foundation to a complex series. I am looking forward to more in depth characterization as well as more vivid descriptions to paint the author"s world. At this point, I'm missing a real empathy for the main characters and a vivid plot line because it reads more like a D & D manual.

This is a fun adventure, but easily predictable. Would have loved it more if it would have been a little less formulaic.

Anti-heroes
Revisado: 04-06-18
If you enjoy a devious complex main character who has surprising tricks up his sleeve, then you are in luck. Locke is a great anti-hero, and while he isn't instantaneously likeable, he grows on you. The plot is neatly complex without being easily predictable. Character development is primarily spent on Locke and the antagonist with minor attention to secondary characters. Hopefully a second book in the series will weave these players into a secondary and equally compelling sub-plots. The world Locke lives in could savor a little more happiness...the sheer drudgery and revenge ideaology was reminiscent of Les Miserable making it a bit hard to get through.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Historia
A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

Always a Pleasure
Revisado: 07-31-17
Neil Gaimon weaves together a tale that spurs your imagination while his velvety voice holds your rapt attention. When I read stories of a traveling bard captivating his audience at a large festivity, Neil's performance is exactly what I picture. Bravo. Through the hazy fog of an unusual little boy's remembrance of his past, we encounter a relationship forged with an eccentric girl, her family, and creatures of mythic proportion while traveling no farther tha the end of the lane.

If you haven't already tried any of the Outlander novels, then you should absolutely do so immediately. MOHB continues the adventures, breaks your heart a couple times, makes you gasp and giggle, then leaves you wanting more. Favorite author ever!
