Historia
Detective Sam Helsdown hasn’t seen his daughter Zoe in two years and he’s excited and more than a little nervous to be at the airport picking her up for a visit. She’s 10 years old and has flown on her own for the first time. Flight BA631 from Athens has already landed and soon a trickle of people begins entering Arrivals. Among them is a little girl who runs towards him, head down, and throws herself into his arms saying ‘Daddy!’. But then he looks at her properly. This is not Zoe. This is not his daughter.

Rushed
Revisado: 03-25-25
Good idea for a story and good characters but rushed. Felt like a made-for-tv version of a very long book that was cut down. To many details left out and choppy ending.

All Bob Hoon ever wanted was a good whisky, and some peace and quiet. But, when Hoon hears that his friend and MI5 agent, Miles Crabtree, has gone missing in the United States, he is dragged back into action once more. The hunt leads him to the Florida Everglades, and into conflict with the violent locals, the terrifying wildlife, and a Sheriff with a sinister agenda of his own.

great story but the American accents are distractingly bad
Revisado: 07-15-24
Another great story by Kirk with the best characters of any writer! I usually love Angus King’s narration, but this is the second book I have heard him narrate set in America and the American accents are distractingly bad. They are something like a 1950’s tv western and a northeast accent from 1940’s radio rolled into one, and completely wrong for any particular region, especially Florida and Nevada where the story is set. It was a rough listen.

Great start to a new series. Really enjoy the writing style and character development. As always, angus king brings another layer and the performance was great. I look forward to more books in this series.

Decent story overshadowed by lunacy
Revisado: 11-03-23
I keep listening to this series because there is a good story buried under the dreadful dialogue between characters, annoying voices in Kate’s head, totally unrealistic police procedure, and just kind of unlikeable characters. The tinny, and somehow simultaneously robotic and melodramatic narration doesn’t help.

Fair knockoff
Revisado: 05-03-23
Okay story, although character development is shallow. Plot moves along fine, and then just falls off at the end like the author had to get the book to the publisher the next morning and tried to wrap it up in a few pages. My biggest issue with the book is the STRIKING character and plot similarities to Kirk’s DCI Logan series. Walking a thin line and barely stayed on this side of plagiarism IMO.
But at least there was solid narration by Angus King.

Every cliche
Revisado: 04-27-23
No suspense, an uninteresting mystery, a romance that was completely unbelievable and forced, unlikable characters, and cliche male detective swooping in to save the helpless female who is dead set on becoming a victim.

Contrived dialogue
Revisado: 07-15-22
The dialogue throughout this book is so contrived and doesn’t flow naturally at all. Seemed almost melodramatic how they kept calling criminals “villains.” And the performance makes it difficult to tell who is talking.

A Michael bay movie
Revisado: 04-05-22
While I still love the characters and dialogue, this book had one long fight scene after another. We get it, Bob can fight. By the 20th fight scene, it overwhelmed the storyline without adding anything interesting.

Back on track
Revisado: 01-14-22
The narrator, Steve Worsley, is back after the last 2 books in the series were narrated (poorly) by the author. Although the switching back and forth of narrators in the series is difficult, I am so happy to have the original narrator back! The story also was much more engaging after a lull. I think this series is back on track!

A flop
Revisado: 12-24-21
The first several books in this series were suspenseful with clever twists and nice character development. This one was a mess. It never addressed so many loose ends from the previous book ending. It was so unrealistic; I can suspend reality to an extent, but this was ridiculous. And once you realize it is written in the style of a bad crime drama spoof, it became mind-numbingly predictable. Finally the change in narrator for this book did nothing to help.
