Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Masterful
Revisado: 08-02-24
We all studied the conduct of the Civil War in school but few of us understood the events leading up to it. And many still don’t accept that slavery was the primary cause. This book puts that to rest with unassailable evidence.

Historia
Adam Gordon is a brilliant, if highly unreliable, young American poet on a prestigious fellowship in Madrid, struggling to establish his sense of self and his relationship to art. Instead of following the dictates of his fellowship, Adam's 'research' becomes a meditation on the possibility of the genuine in the arts and beyond: are his relationships with the people he meets in Spain as fraudulent as he fears his poems are? Is poetry an essential art form, or merely a screen for the reader's projections?

Interesting book marred by monotone reading
Revisado: 04-16-24
The title says it all. The story of an extremely insecure young man and promising poet is absorbing and relatable. But, perhaps intentionally to mimic the character’s insecurity, the author reads it in a deadly monotone. Consider reading it yourself!

Historia
In Being Mortal, best-selling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

A book everyone should read
Revisado: 07-13-15
The insights in this well-thought out and well-written book are profound. Despite what may seem like depressing subject matter, Dr. Gawande's personal style makes the book more than readable and provides hope that the end of life need not be the nightmare so many encounter in the hands of "big medicine".

Historia
When Lawrence Anthony learned that the northern white rhino, living in the war-ravaged Congo, was on the very brink of extinction, he knew he had to act. If the world lost the sub-species, it would be the largest land mammal since the woolly mammoth to go extinct. In The Last Rhinos, Anthony recounts his attempts to save these remarkable animals. The demand for rhino horns in the Far East has turned poaching into a dangerous black market that threatens the lives of not just these rare beasts, but also the rangers who protect them.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

George Guidall is a joy
Revisado: 05-17-15
This book held my interest for two reasons: it's story is unconventional and unpredictable, but mostly because the narrator is so excellent. He doesn't read the story to you. He "tells" it to you and draws you in with his accents and expressive telling. I believe he could make the telephone directory interesting.
