As Russian and American crews sprint for a secret bounty hidden away on the lunar surface, old rivalries blossom and the political stakes are stretched to breaking point back on Earth. Houston flight controller Kazimieras "Kaz" Zemeckis must do all he can to keep the NASA crew together, while staying one step ahead of his Soviet rivals. But not everyone on board Apollo 18 is quite who they appear to be.

Lots of historical detail
Revisado: 12-21-23
This book would likely be a treat for fans of this era.
Chris Hadfield had a difficult task of combining well-publicized detail and fiction and I think he did a pretty good job, especially as a first work of fiction. Unlike most fiction writers, his expertise and integrity required him to provide accurate detail, so I think that got in the way of the story. (There's a motto amongst fiction writers; "Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story." ) I didn't/couldn't finish the book because it wasn't for me. Too much detail, not enough story up front to engage me. The female love interest was a cardboard cut-out and I didn't find the main character engaging/sympathetic.
All this detail was crammed down my throat when it was happening in real life, so it leaves me cold. I started this book for my book club but just couldn't carry on, even though I tried. I'm a fan of Chris Hadfield's and I really wanted to like it.

Historia
Following a humiliating fourth season in London, Lady Elizabeth Fraser is on her way back to her ancestral country estate when her train careens off the rails and bursts into flames. Though she is injured, she manages to drag herself and her unconscious mother out of the wreckage, and amid the chaos that ensues, a brilliant young railway surgeon saves her mother's life. Elizabeth feels an immediate connection with Paul Wilcox - though society would never deem a medical man eligible for the daughter of an earl.

Read this author; avoid the narrator
Revisado: 07-04-23
Third time lucky, I managed to mostly ignore the inconsistent British accent attempted by the narrator. While it took me out of the story many times (ie, "father" doesn't rhyme with "bother"), the actual book was good enough to still make it worth listening to. I'm glad I persevered. However, I would definitely read/listen to something else by this author but would avoid the narrator unless she's reading in her own accent.

Fun story read by an excellent performer
Revisado: 03-28-19
Julie Berry is new to me and so I didn’t know what to expect. Not my usual reading genre. But I was really delighted with the entire book and would certainly recommend it to anyone who is considering reading it.
Jayne Entwhistle is one of the performers I love, and she delivered once again with the reading of this book.

Historia
The year is 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.

Satisfying Cozy, Well Performed
Revisado: 07-31-18
I will definitely read more of the series. There are two main characters, one of whom is British, the other is American. Because of this, it’s a challenge for a performer to read without creating a distracting accent one way or the other. Barbara Rosenblat does an exceptional job of both the American and British accents. I’m picky about accents because I studied linguistics in University and I used to speak with a British accent but now I speak with a North American accent. I could not tell which of the two accents was the natural one for Ms. Rosenblat. I hope there are more books in this series and that they continue to be read by this performer as she adds another level to what is already a very good book.

Lighthearted and charming
Revisado: 06-22-18
There's a delightfully cheeky ghost whose antics made me laugh out loud and wish I had him around when I needed him. This story s a short, sweet escape from the worries of the world. An added bonus at the end: a traditional Scottish recipe and the little-known secret to its success. You're in good hands when you read a book by Jo-Ann Carson!
In spite of the cover showing a gorgeous guy, there are no overt sexual scenes here: just good old-fashioned kissing. Just the way I like it!
The main reader, Lisa Riechert, seems to have done mostly non-fiction before this and I wondered if she could step up to the challenge of reading fictional material. Her voice has a lovely tone and I feel she shows great promise for reading fiction. Darren Pollock, reads the ghost character with a delightful Scottish burr.

Debbie Macomber meets Nicholas Sparks
Revisado: 01-07-16
An emotionally satisfying read by a skilled storyteller. Would definitely recommend this book and am interested in reading or listening to the rest of the Caribou Crossing series. You get the sense of community as with Debbie Macomber and the emotional depth as with Nicholas Sparks. The author seems to know her stuff about rodeos and horse ranches so I enjoyed learning something as well. After reading this book I felt as though I’d been on a holiday to Caribou Crossing.
