Why is Red Bull so popular, though everyone—everyone!—hates the taste? Humans are, in a word, irrational, basing decisions as much on subtle external signals (that little blue can) as on objective qualities (flavor, price, quality). The surrounding world, meanwhile, is irreducibly complex and random. This means future success can’t be projected on any accounting spreadsheet. To strike gold, you must master the dark art and curious science of conjuring irresistible ideas: alchemy.

What made a prominent conspiracy-theorist YouTuber finally see that 9/11 was not a hoax? Can you finally have a productive conversation about politics with your uncle at the next family gathering? How does an ordinary person find the courage to leave a cult? Can widespread social change only take place when a generation dies out?

Big fan of David but this book left me feeling a little creeped out. The methods he describes sound great and no doubt can aid in real communication. After finishing and pondering it I realized that I don't live my life trying to change others 'wrongthink'. We humans are constantly manipulated and when we're doing it we call it persuasion. If it is as effective as suggested, it could be a very good thing but I just couldn't shake the thought of an army of empathic activists with the warmth and kindness of a Morman working me for conformity on 'the current thing'. I felt a heightened resistance to people with clipboards building rapport. probably just me...

unfortunately, I think it's necessary to say "regardless of your political perspective". This will likely be savaged by those with strong adherence to accepted narratives. The real herd immunity only seems to be for certain narratives.

In this unflinching exploration of corruption in America, Chayes exposes how corruption has thrived within our borders - from the titans of America's Gilded Age (Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, et al.) to the collapse of the stock market in 1929, the Great Depression, and FDR's New Deal; from Joe Kennedy's years of banking, bootlegging, machine politics, and pursuit of infinite wealth to the deregulation of the Reagan Revolution - undermining this nation's proud middle class and union members.

she has outlined a lot of corruption but it leans heavy on the red team. Obama admin came out well. TDS is aparrent. some good ideas to fight corruption and big money interests. I think it too human to eradicate. resistance is futile, though necessary

Historia
At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

Too many stories....
Revisado: 03-21-20
I could only do a couple hours of the book. Too many stories of people, both introverts and extroverts. It was like being led around a cocktail party and constantly introduced to people with whom I didn't want to speak. I had to excuse myself to the kitchen and stand with the lone smoker out back just to get the energy to leave.
I guess I just needed to get to the ideas without the tour of all humanity first.

Historia
His fiction is known to be some of the most terrifying in the genre of supernatural horror, but Thomas Ligotti's first nonfiction book may be even scarier. Drawing on philosophy, literature, neuroscience, and other fields of study, Ligotti takes the penetrating lens of his imagination and turns it on his audience, causing them to grapple with the brutal reality that they are living a meaningless nightmare, and anyone who feels otherwise is simply acting out an optimistic fallacy.

Historia
Does your dog love you? Every dog lover knows the feeling. The nuzzle of a dog’s nose, the warmth of them lying at our feet, even their whining when they want to get up on the bed. It really seems like our dogs love us, too. But for years, scientists have resisted that conclusion, warning against anthropomorphizing our pets. Enter Clive Wynne, a pioneering canine behaviorist whose research is helping to usher in a new era: one in which love, not intelligence or submissiveness, is at the heart of the human-canine relationship.

But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

Almost a great book.....
Revisado: 10-08-19
I really did like this book. I learned much and am glad I read it.
* THe stories were just too much story filler for me. I found myself really tiring at the unrelated details.
* I appreciated his noting his difficulties navigating the establishment, even as a physician, in his family's story.
* There was only a few minutes on physician assisted death mgmt. It was dismissed out of hand. That is unfortunate.
* There is little mentioned about suicide, but here again, it is dismissed. Again, unfortunate. It is a valid discussion in this important context.
You will be facing someone's mortality, so this book is a great start to receiving the reality of it.

Boring....
Revisado: 09-24-19
I've read a number of books on the subject so this should be considered in my review. Most of the examples are in many such books I've read. I have tried to enjoy the great courses but they are just too "behind the curve" and the format is no longer useful to me as a listener. I just can't recommend them anymore. Sorry.
