felt very gossipy
Revisado: 02-15-25
This was a difficult book to finish. The characters were lovely but a little bit of loveliness can go too far without a strong plot, which had no actual action. Rather this story was chapter after chapter of older ladies gossiping about other older ladies to solve a very dull murder. I really did love the main character but would have preferred that the other characters weren't just like her,

Dutton had been a handsome war hero, but tragedy surrounded him, and his nature had always been unpredictable. Loosing it's Appeal but holding out hope
Revisado: 02-04-25
I have loved this series from the beginning but it's starting to loose its appeal. In the beginning, this mystery series stood out for its fun action: the characters moved across the country side, took wild risks, explored caverns and castles and generally got themselves into some tricky corners that they had to get out of before solving the mystery. In this installment, as well a few of the most recent issues, the author has abandoned that fun action, set most of the story in a single location and replaced action for scene after scene after scene after scene of talking heads. Sections of the book were an absolute slog to get through. It feels like the author has lost her passion for the characters and story telling in general, has discovered a formula for her books, and is just calling it in so she can crank one issue out after another. Let's get real. It happens to the best of authors. So I hope this issue is a hick-up in the system and Menuhin gets back to her roots of great story telling. Also, please no more high pitched, fingernails across chalkboard style female character voices. In one section, the character screeched so high pitched, it scared my cat who leaped straight up in the air, her back claws digging deep into my leg before scrambling for safety.

For Iris, each visit to her mother in St Mabon’s Cove, Cornwall has been the same—a serene escape from the city. But today, as she breaths in the salt air on the doorstep of her beloved childhood home, a heavy weight of anticipation settles over her. Iris knows she’s adopted, but any questions about where she came from have always been shut down by her parents, who can’t bear to revisit the past. Now, Iris can’t stop thinking about what she’s read on the official paperwork: BABY GIRL, FRANCE, 1939 – the year war was declared with Nazi Germany.

A touching story with a sloggy beginning but don't give up.
Revisado: 11-16-24
I loved this book and agree with most of the reviewers' positive experience. That said, the beginning was a bit of a slog through constant, constant, constant interruptions in the plot by the narrator filling the pages with needless character info dumps about their feelings about some random event in the past that ultimately did not actually contribute to either the plot or our understanding of the characters, Fortunately, once you get past part one, the interruptions lessen, the plot gets rolling and you are hooked.

Historia
Filled with breathtaking scenes, the elemental north woods, the sweep of seasons, an iconic American barn, a fateful vision rendered in the falling rain. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is a meditation on the limits of language and what lies beyond, a brilliantly inventive retelling of an ancient story, and an epic tale of devotion, betrayal, and courage in the American heartland.

waste of time
Revisado: 08-23-24
The writing is marvelous, almost too much, meaning it's all about how cleaver the writing is and not about the story. The author meanders through long descriptions (beautifully written, but too long to remain useful) and has a secret love for characters reading ungodly long letters within the story, which do nothing for the actual story. Half way through this sluggish book, I started to check out more in-depth reviews and plot synopsis's. Now that I know the ending (which is awful) I feel free to walk away from it and get my life back. I respect anyone who can finish writing a novel and get someone else to publish it but I simply cannot, in any measure, recommend this book.

Mostly Talking Heads This Time
Revisado: 09-06-23
I love this series. The characters are fun and easy to like. This book, however, seemed it bit too talking heads to me, not much action and too few locations to keep the mystery interesting all the time. Still, it had a great twist at the end and I look forward to the next adventures of Major Lenox and company.

Beyond Boring
Revisado: 06-25-22
I'm a huge cat lover and cozy mystery reader so I was thrilled to start this book. BIG MISTAKE. Boring doesn't begin to describe this book. Page after page after page of ordinary, domestic details, such as how good the brownies were and how wonderful a meeting at the library was. Snore.Snore. Snore. Yes there are two adorable cats in the tale, but so what, when the humans are beyond boring.

I like my stories to have some conflict. By chapter six, the most conflict that had occurred is that Maisie got off a train. Too slow to finish.

Great story marred by lousy production
Revisado: 04-02-22
Twice now, the producer of this series seems to have forgotten the meaning of the word "chapter." The story is annoyingly broken into a 4-8 minute "chapters" that don't actually match with the story chapters, making it impossible to set the timer to "end of chapter." Sometimes it actually stops in the middle of a sentence. This poor production also makes it hard to find your way back to a chapter you might want to read again because you have no hope of ever actually finding it. This was so annoying I eventually gave up on the story and am not confident that I will want to continue this series.
Worse, it's the second time they've done this. Complained it about last time, but they just did it again. I doesn't feel like the producers of this series actually like their readers anymore and are doing all they can to just crank it out and make a buck. Too bad. This was a great series.

Revisado: 01-04-22
The Tomb of the Chatelaine has been another fun addition to the Heathcliff Lennox murder mystery series. Although it felt a bit more "talking heads" than previous episodes, the mystery unfolded at a steady, entertaining pace and the ending did not disappoint. Bravo!

Fun Characters in a Repetitive Mess
Revisado: 11-28-21
I love cozies and I was excited about this one...until chapter 48. Not even halfway through the book, I realized it was not a mystery at all, just a lot of blah, blah, blah. Too often the characters blabber about a scene that I just sat through listening to either the narrator or two other characters already blab about. Excessively repetitive. I can see how this will make a great premise for a movie, especially in the hands of screenwriter who understands the power of editing out all the blah, blah, blah. But as an audio book, this was just a cute premise executed as a repetitive mess.
