Historia
Rain slicked streets, riots, murder, chaos. It’s July 1992 and the Troubles in Northern Ireland are still grinding on after twenty-five apocalyptic years. Detective Inspector Sean Duffy got his family safely over the water to Scotland, to “Shortbread Land”. Duffy’s a part-timer now, only returning to Belfast six days a month to get his pension. It’s an easy gig, if he can keep his head down.

Historia
When Penny Dahl calls the Finders Keepers detective agency, hoping for help locating her missing daughter, Holly Gibney is reluctant to accept the case. Her partner, Pete, has Covid. Her (very complicated) mother has just passed away. And Holly is meant to be on leave. But something in Penny’s desperate voice makes it impossible to turn her down. Meanwhile, mere blocks from where Bonnie Dahl disappeared live Professors Rodney and Emily Harris. But they are also harboring a shocking, unholy secret.

Probably my last SK novel
Revisado: 07-27-24
I have read just about everything from Stephen King. Other big readers I know tease me about reading Kings’s novels because of the “supernatural” tidbits. I have never cared. I love how he develops his characters. They are always relatable and intriguing. Holly Gibney is one of my favorites. An almost broken woman that happens to meet a caring police officer who changes her life completely. How can anyone not want a woman like her to succeed?
The problem in this novel is that SK chose to use identity politics to degrade the relationship of Holly and Bill Hodges for me. I highly doubt Bill would want his police force to be looked upon as uncaring and racist. Sure not all police officers are outstanding or even well-meaning, but a few bad apples out of the thousands that serve this country hardly deserve the slander suggested in this novel.
SK hit on just about every left winged subject. Racism, hatred of the police, gay bashing, Covid deniers, you name it. I kept waiting for the transvestite character or abortionist to make their appearance.
I don’t know if SK plans on writing anymore books but I will check the reviews before purchasing any future novels. I read (listen) because I want to escape. Not because I want to hear a rich man divide the country with his political views.

Historia
As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee was one of millions trapped by a secretive and brutal communist regime. Her home on the border with China gave her some exposure to the world beyond the confines of the Hermit Kingdom and, as the famine of the 1990s struck, she began to wonder, question and realise that she had been brainwashed her entire life. Given the repression, poverty and starvation she witnessed surely her country could not be, as she had been told, 'the best on the planet'?

Really enjoyed listening to the author’s experience of leaving North Korea. Kudos to her for having the strength to do what she did. I wish her and her family all the best in their new home. May everyone one day experience the same.

Historia
Slamming the door on the hellscape of 1980s Belfast, Detective Inspector Sean Duffy hopes that the 1990s are going to be better for him and the people of Northern Ireland. As a Catholic cop in the mainly Protestant RUC he still has a target on his back, and with a steady girlfriend and a child the stakes couldn’t be higher. After handling a mercurial triple agent and surviving the riots and bombings and assassination attempts, all Duffy wants to do now is live. But in his final days in charge of Carrickfergus CID, a missing persons report captures his attention.

His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. One evening in 1951, an itinerant storyteller arrives unannounced at a house in the Irish countryside. In exchange for a bed and a warm meal, he invites his hosts and their neighbors to join him by the wintry fireside and begins to tell formative stories of Ireland's history. Enjoyable bit of history but…
Revisado: 11-04-23
A bit too much of wokeness thrown in that I felt I was constantly being lectured to versus entertained. I am well aware that the issues facing today’s society are nothing new but must every character prove something? The story ended with me liking the Colonel more than anyone else since he never verbalized his or anyone else’s dirty laundry but accepted all nonetheless.

Self-absorbed 20 year olds
Revisado: 08-13-23
Maybe I shouldn’t have listened to this immediately after “Normal People.” I think the part I enjoyed the most about the author’s previous book was the immaturity of the main characters to express their feelings for one another. Low self-esteem and/or anxiety being the main culprits. Their individual personalities were interesting/likable, however. I was able to recall having some of the same hangouts myself at that age. Who hasn’t worried what others would think? At the completion of that book I felt that the two had somewhat matured. Everyone has their own opinions on how their relationship would have continued but I like to think that they would have gotten there in the end.
The main characters in this book were a bit too similar for me. They were immature and had much the same type of philosophies on current events. Not much of a shocker there as many young educated people express similar anti-democratic sentiments. The problem was I couldn’t seem to find much to like about them. I’m sure this was the author’s intention. Make us annoyed by their self- absorption until they mature enough to deserve some type of happiness.
The fact that I didn’t care very much for the characters does not mean that the author isn’t a very good writer. She always does an exemplary job of describing people in their 20’s. Especially their often evolving political views. I’ve met many European students express these exact thoughts.
Reader, as always, did a fantastic job.
