Unexpected
Revisado: 03-22-25
I was so looking forward to reading this book. With the premise of reading about Jessie Fauset the “ literary midwife”, W.E.B Dubois, the Harlem Renaissance, and how some of the most notable black poets came to be known were a few reasons I was eager to read this story. I struggled to give this a three star rating. I wish the author had not compounded most of the plot into the affair of W.E.B. Du Bois and Ms Jessie Fauset. I was a bit disappointed that with such a strong African-American woman of strong character and accomplishments she seemed unable to make any decisions without relating them back to WEB Dubois.
This felt very repetitive and to me, took away from for many literary accomplishments. I feel as to know about the affair was instrumental, but to make the entire story revolve around it sucked the life out of it. I commend the author on her in-depth research on the setting, the period and the people of the story. I feel the author’s research about Ms. Jessie Fauset was phenomenal, and I really enjoyed reading about this literary icon and her involvement with notable, black poets, such as Langston Hughes, Nella Larsen, Countee Cullen and many others. Although I feel these relationships, the monumental discuss that accomplishment, was a bit over shadowed once again with the affair she had with W.E.B.Du Bois.

The last thing I ever expected was to insult a colleague before I even started a new job. But here I am, already on thin ice after I mistook a fellow doctor for a patient on a bad drug trip. Oops. No matter how handsome or infuriatingly aloof he is, Grant Gao isn’t going to spoil my fresh start. Instead, I’m going to keep myself (maybe too) busy with my roommates, work, and passion: starting a new program to improve pregnancy care in the community.

Cute Romance story
Revisado: 01-10-25
I enjoyed how this romance story unfolded. Even though you knew where things were headed, it was done with such reality/believability and none of that romcom sappyness. The characters are believable and relatable. The issues that they dealt with and the misconceptions they went through are real life happenings. The author dealt with everything very well. This was a good story and I would recommend it.

Revisado: 10-20-24
I loved this book! The author developed his characters with well thought out research and made them come alive. The plot is very believable and the dual settings of the 1920’s to the present day had smooth transitions, was very enjoyable and well written! The beginning of the story requires one to really focus in as the author gives background information on the theme of the story which takes a bit to digest first before plowing forward. I really enjoyed the author’s book The Violin Conspiracy and really looked forward to reading this one. I was not disappointed!! This is a great read!

Sisters Amanda Foster and Erin Turner have little in common except the childhood bedroom they once shared and the certainty each feels that her way of life is best. Amanda follows the rules - at the school where she works; in her community; and as a picture-perfect daughter, wife, and mother-to-be. Erin follows her heart - in love and otherwise - living a bohemian lifestyle on a shoestring budget and honoring her late father’s memory with a passion for music and her fledgling bath-products business.
