I love understated stories. I knew nothing going in, but found myself transfixed by this quiet story about a man and his family, and, most importantly, the unanswered questions that loom over him.

I love Reid's first two books and enjoyed this one but it didn't quite hit me as powerfully. I found the story engaging and the perception of reality intriguing, though I'm not sure about the ending. While I enjoyed Penny's character, I never truly felt for her. Reid has always been known for his great character work. Here it didn't have the depth I've come to expect from him.

An amazing production all around. Writing, performances, music. Can't recommend enough. A classic story that never gets old. Just more haunting.

The only thing that kept me going was the narrator. Overall she was great except with male characters.

But the story...
The characters...

This thing needs a lot of work from a good editor. The author had a difficult time balancing the characters, and the plot lacked any depth, which can be fine in the presence of interesting characters, which there are none to be found.

Amateur writing all over the place, from over explanation, telling and not showing, alliteration, and much more.

For an audiobook at this price I expected more.

Skip it.

Like with all the Great Courses, this is an excellent presentation. I enjoyed how each section was broken up, almost able to be listened to in any order if you wanted, although there are some references to previous chapters. The information was accessible despite some of the scientific jargon, and the narrator kept things flowing without anything ever becoming dull.

I haven't read McKee's STORY yet but had heard from numerous people to check this one out anyway. From the listening, it did seem like it covered similar ground but expanded on the original text. The performance(s) were great, many times supplemented by actors when it was a scene from a film or TV show. I feel like the audio book provided the listener a better handle on the concepts when actually performed.

The book explores the mechanics of dialogue, how to create subtext, how to make sure you're writing from a POV so everyone doesn't sound the same, and much more. Every concept is accompanied by examples that help hammer the technique home. I feel like I'll be coming back to this one frequently.

What made the experience of listening to Fiction Unboxed the most enjoyable?

The narration was easy to listen to, and even though he wasn't the one who wrote the book, I felt the personality of the writers come through. And obviously, the story. Though I backed this kickstarter and followed a long day to day with the videos and draft pages, I still got a lot out of the book. Reflections, anecdotes and advice that wasn't present during the initial experience.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There weren't any "characters," but Johnny's delivery was entertaining.

What does Simon Whistler bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A British accent. Hah! But in all seriousness, he's easy to listen to and read in a very conversational tone that allowed Johnny's "voice" to seep through.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

Really enjoyed it. And for those who participated in the kickstarter and think there is nothing to be gained by listening or reading this, you'd be wrong.
